THE GAME THE RAIN LEFT BEHIND

THE GAME THE RAIN LEFT BEHIND

Tony Cohen

A Holtwhites classic just leaves us wet behind the ears

The rain had let up at last and the British Summer could continue against our old friends Holtwhites Trinibis.
Holtwhites is a strange ground in the middle of a housing estate but a lovely place to play against always friendly opposition. Rahil won the toss and in his new method decided to bat. I wasn’t sure as the pitch was bound to dry during the day. Thew wicket was green and had not been covered during the weeks downpour.
Krish and Rhys strode to the wicket and a slow steady start was seen when Krish was done by a Wilkes-Green snorter. In came Abhijay and made it easier for me to tell them apart!!!!! They were playing sensibly and Rhys was looking comfortable when he smashed one back straight and their triple threat got a finger on the drive and Abhijay was run out in the most unfortunate way. 34 for 2 after 9 became 34 for 3 when our nugget Neel was caught behind.
Enter the skipper and he and Rhys played some lovely shots amid careful defence against tight bowling and it was a surprise when Rhys hit Sailing off the miserly Mohammed. A very well made and mature 39. Aadit came in on the back of a great innings at Harpenden and looked good until he misread one from Mohammed and the Tom Palmer got a beaut from the said Mohammed (who apparently is the most picked player in the Holtwhites fantasy cricket).
Sam Jacobs joined Rahil and played very well but Rahil was lbw to Kashmiri (mmm seemed rather a poor decision)
Jas (Oliver) Triple threat and Ross added valuable runs but we were all out in 41.3 overs for 142.
After a lovely tea made by Helen RCC took to the field in determined mood. One thing we have is youth and great fielding.
Roscoe removed Sheehan who is .6 foot 5 and the ball hit him above the knee roll (shall we say 1 all umpire). Abadeen and Singh were sent back to the hut by DSJ but Fletcher the overseas Wicket Keeper batsman was digging in and when it was 39 for 4 after 21 overs it looked very even but Fletcher was looking to bat all day.
Rahil got Jack 2 to hit Tom Palmer who snaffled a very good catch and the bowling was backed up by great fielding led by Rhys and Tom backed by Rahil and Oliver. Kashmiri was out to Ra.hil bowled by A gazunder.
Smith then came in and helped steady the ship playing doggedly with Fletcher doing the same but rotating the strike when they could.
Rahil rolled dice and switched Triple threat from the living legend (Ziggy Caldwell end). Anyo9ne who uses Borehamwood station will know Ziggy. DSJ got his Southern Hemisphere pal out with what can only be described as a stunning sublime reaction catch as he snared a tracer bullet from Fletcher who even applauded Dan. Wilkes Green tried to up the anti and Samir hit a six to win the game in the 46th over.
Had we batted 46 or 47 overs I feel we would have won but this shows the standard we must get to. Our fielding again was sensational and the bowling excellent. Ross 10 over 1 for 12 DSJ 3 for 29 and Rahil 3 for 36.
Lets move on to Darcie McCrostie and his Oes team this weekend.
