With this long hot summer continuing to test the stamina of our U15 thoroughbreds, they were greeted with some unwelcome news in being asked to field first on another tropical evening.

Our hosts duly put us to the sword, on a wicket made for batting and with the assistance of a sun flogged outfield. There was plenty of leather to chase. None of our bowlers were spared punishment as stray deliveries were dispatched and our bowling lines were severely tested. It was a draining 20 overs, and we dragged ourselves off with a target of 171 to chase. Our only success came courtesy of Shahmeer (1-20), a catch taken behind the stumps by Issa.

We certainly didn’t lie down and it was a pleasure to witness the quality batsmanship shown by our standout openers, Aarav and Akein. Both were undaunted by the task ahead and picked the right balls to go after and those to respect. Aarav reached retirement first, 29 from 24 balls (4 fours & 1 huge six) and Akein quickly followed with 28 from 21 balls (5 fours). If West Herts had been as generous as us with their extras count, then we would probably have been ahead of the game at this point. It was telling that the first wide or no ball bowled in this innings occurred in the 15th over. As the run rate predictably spiralled against disciplined bowling, Sahas showed exactly the right temperament, and he was supported by Issa and Ben. Sahas ended up retiring on as good as a run a ball 30 (4 fours). Our final total of 133-4 showed admirable fight against an always strong West Herts side.
