Radlett CC 2nd XI v Bishop's Stortford II on Sat 04 Jul 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Because of the 1st XI game on the top ground, this game was played on RCC's rather smaller second field. The pitch showed traces of green, the temperature was warm, and the sky was overcast. Bishop's Stortford's team arrived later than they intended, due to traffic delays. Nick Fielden won the toss, decided that RCC would field first, and the game began at 13:10 hr.
Johnson Mafa and Stuart Browne opened the bowling for RCC. In his second over, Johnson bowled BSCC's No 1 batsman with the total at 8 runs. Light drizzle fell for a few overs, but did not hold up play. BSCC maintained a reasonable scoring rate, reaching 56-2 by the end of over 15, during which James Lewis took a catch at short leg to give Johnson his second wicket. At the end of over 18, Matt Stark, BSCC's captain and No 2 batsman, retired, unable to grip his bat due to a bruised forearm. He was replaced by Adrian Wacey, son of Roy Wacey, a former HCCC and BSCC player. Adrian scored 34 from 33 balls before he was caught by Nick Fielden off John Barr's bowling at 92-4 in the 26th over. Radlett had taken 103 minutes to bowl their first 25 overs, while BSCC's scoring rate decreased as their innings progressed.
The later stages of BSCC's innings were marked by a patient innings of 37 from their wicketkeeper, Harry Bass and three successive runouts for wickets 6,7 and 8. BSCC's Nos 10 and 11 put up a determined resistance, adding 20 for the 9th wicket, which fell at 159-9 off the first ball of over 53. At this point, Matt Stark declared, deciding not to resume his own innings for the remaining five balls.
BSCC collected 2 x 2 = 4 batting bonus points for exceeding a score of 155. Since RCC had asked BSCC to bat first, they gained no bowling bonus points for taking the first five wickets. In addition, they only managed to bowl 49 overs instead of 53 in the first three hours of playing time. BSCC chose to bat on for their full allocation af 53 overs, but RCC did not gain a fourth bowling point for taking the 9th BSCC wicket. BSCC then had the choice of bowling either 47 overs or (49 - 6) = 43 overs in reply. They opted to bowl 43 overs, making the required run rate for an RCC win marginally greater.
Andre Sharma and Nick Fielden opened RCC's innings against BSCC's fast bowlers, Alex Layer (U19) and Jack Williams (U17). Nick (13) was LBW to Williams with the score 19. By the end of their first restricted spells, the young bowlers' figures were Layer 7-3-16-0, Williams 6-1-25-1. BSCC's change bowlers were reasonably economical, but they were not helped by a few dropped catches. RCC's batsmen increased their scoring rate skilfully, and reached the required total with 23 balls and five wickets to spare. Andre Sharma finished with 68 not out, scoring 19 runs from the last 12 balls which he faced.
Radlett got 30 league points for their win, and BSCC add 5 bowling bonus points to their 4 batting bonus points.
So far this season, Radlett's good results have not suffered from their slow over rate. This happy state of affairs may not continue in a tight finish against strong opponents. Faster field changeovers between one over and the next would be helpful. In addition, Johnson Mafa, a tall man with a long stride, is having occasional problems over front-foot no balls, increasing the time taken to complete an over.
