Radlett CC 2nd XI v Welwyn Garden City II on Sat 20 Jun 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 7 wickets

Match report The pitch for this game was dry, and showed slight traces of greenness. The sky was cloudy, with occasional patches of sunshine. WGC won the toss, and decided to bat.

Johnson Mafa and Stuart Browne opened the bowling for Radlett. Stuart Browne claimed the wicket of WGC's No. 2 with his first ball, a catch to Haydn Smith at slip. James Lewis took the first of his three catches to dismiss WGC's other opener during Johnson's fourth over, leaving WGC struggling a little at 7-2. During Johnson's fifth over, the umpires spoke to him and to Nick Fielden, raising their concern about the number of short-pitched balls which he was bowling.

WGC continued to score rather slowly, while wickets fell steadily. When WGC's top scorer, Tom Small (52), was caught by James Lewis off John Barr's bowling, their score had reached 124-6 from 39 overs. Two runs later, Ben Charles took catches behind the stumps from the bowling of David Hegarty and John Barr. WGC's 9th wicket stand added 8 runs, and their unbroken 10th wicket stand took the total to 153-9. This stand included 16 runs from the final (53rd) over, bowled by Johnson Mafa.

In general, all six of Radlett's bowlers were economical, and the nine wickets which fell were shared out quite evenly. As usual, their over rate was rather slow. WGC earned two bonus batting points during their innings, and Radlett achieved nine bonus bowling points. Radlett took a very creditable six catches.

Rain began to fall during the tea interval. A sheet was used to cover the pitch, but the continuing rain delayed the start of Radlett's innings by 33 minutes. Applying the League's Match Rules reduced the maximum length of the innings by nine overs, from 47 to 38 overs. This increased the run rate required for victory substantially. In the event, the wet outfield proved an even greater handicap to WGC, since the ball quickly became slippery, which made bowling and catching difficult.

Andre Sharma, a newly recruited left-handed batsman from Harrow St Mary's CC, and Nick Fielden opened Radlett's innings. They scored at the required rate from the start, with Nick contributing most of the runs at that stage. When he was caught in over 16, he had scored 41 of the total of 66 from 50 balls. This was the highest opening stand for Radlett 2nd XI so far this season. Andre continued, scoring a very good 27 before he hesitated over a chancy run, and was run out with the score on 80-2 in over 21. David Robinson, showing no sign of any back problems, was well caught from a skied drive at the same score two overs later. John Barr (53 no from 33 balls) and James Lewis (23 no from 39 balls) then won the game without further loss, taking the score to 157-3 from 33.2 overs.

Radlett's batsmen offered several catching chances to the slips and wicket keeper which WGC could not hold on to. The game might have been much closer if the ball had not been so slippery. Radlett scored 30 points for their win, while WGC added three bowling bonus points to their two bonus batting points for a total of five bonus points.
