Old Finchelians v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 13 Jun 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 3 wickets
Match report
The weather for this game was dry, with sunny spells broken by small white clouds. The pitch was dry, closely cut and well rolled. Old Finchleians' ground slopes perceptibly from one sightscreen to the nearer stumps, flattens out for the pitch, then slopes again at a shallower angle till it reaches the road boundary. Nick Fielden won the toss for Radlett, and decided to field first.
Johnson Mafa opened the bowling from the top end, with Stuart Browne taking the second over. At the end of Johnson's 3rd over, he had taken 3-6, and Finchleians' score was 18-3. Their No 2 batsman, Matthew Fletcher, had scored 15 of those runs. He went on to reach an excellent 96 before Simon Jackson caught him off David Hegarty's bowling to make Finchleians' score 118-4 from 27 overs. Only two other Finchleians' batsmen reached double figures. Johnson Mafa took 8-49 off 14.1 overs in total. In his second spell of 5.1 overs, he took the wickets of five of Finchleians' later batsmen for only 13 runs.
The innings was completed in only 38.1 overs, after 2 hours 31 minutes of playing time. This early end was just as well, because Radlett's over rate had fallen well behind the League's requirement of 53 overs in 3 hours. In the event, Finchleians' unused 14 overs were added to the normal second innings allocation of 47 overs, giving a total of 61 overs for Radlett to score 153, or for Finchleians to take 10 wickets.
The half-time score was Radlett 5 bonus bowling points, Finchleians 2 bonus batting points.
Simon Jackson, Radlett's No 2 batsman, played a characteristic innings full of big drives, scoring 32 runs from 27 balls, including six fours. He also prevented a possible hat-trick by Finchleians' opening bowler, Robert Wynn Jones after Radlett's first two wickets had fallen cheaply. John Barr (41) and Johnson Mafa kept the run rate moving quite briskly. When they were both dismissed in over 24, each trying big hits, the score had reached 107-6.
With 37 overs left, but 46 runs still needed, Oz Edwards and David Robinson played themselves in cautiously, scoring slowly against tight bowling. This policy paid off as Radlett crept closer and closer to the target. When Oz was out LBW at the end of over 37, only 22 runs were needed for victory. David Robinson, batting at No 8 because of a possible back problem, and David Hegarty completed the job. They were able to relax towards the end, scoring the last 12 runs of their undefeated partnership from only eight balls.
Finchleians only used three bowlers during Radlett's innings. This may have been because five or six of their usual 1st XI were absent, at a Depala family wedding. With a full Finchleians team, the game could have been much closer. Finchleians' over rate (43.2 overs in 2 hours 58 minutes of playing time) was even slower than Radlett's.
The final League result was: Radlett 30 points, Finchleians 9 bonus points (2 batting + 7 bowling).
