Radlett CC 2nd XI v Kings Langley on Sat 23 May 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 6 wickets

Match report The pitch for the game between RCC 2nd XI and Kings Langley CC 1st XI at Cobden Hill on 23 May looked in very good condition, despite its previous use for a one-day and a three-day game earlier in the week. On a dull afternoon, Kings Langley won the toss, and decided to bat.

Johnson Mafa and Stuart Browne opened the bowling. Johnson took a wicket in the first over and Stuart struck in the fourth, making the KLCC score 9 - 2. At this stage, only one run had come from the bat. Five penalty runs were awarded to KLCC in the fifth over because the ball struck a fielding helmet which had been placed on the ground. This helped to improve the KLCC run rate, which nevertheless remained quite slow. Johnson took his second wicket in the 19th over (KLCC 3 - 52). He finished his first spell with good figures of 12-4-21-2.

RCC's first change, John Barr, bowled excellently. He took three wickets in one sequence of four consecutive maidens, including KLCC's top scorer, Paul Ashford (36), and their captain, Kevin Rolfe (19). John bowled at his end for the rest of the innings, adding three more wickets to his haul for an analysis of 13-5-38-6.

At the other end, Stuart Browne's usual economical bowling gave him figures of 13-7-37-1, and David Hegarty bowled very steadily, but with no luck. Johnson Mafa returned, and took the last wicket to fall, that of Tom Sambrook (25), a talented Hertfordshire U17 colt. KLCC's total of 138 from 49.1 overs looked rather too small for comfort.

RCC held on to six catches, failing with other chances, some straight in/straight out, others rather more difficult. RCC managed to bowl only 47 overs in the first three hours of the KLCC innings. Since this was smaller than the 53 overs in three hours required by the League rules, the last two wickets to fall in the KLCC innings did not count towards RCC's bowling bonus points. Furthermore, the maximum length of the RCC innings was reduced to 41 instead of 47 overs, by choice of the KLCC captain.

Half-time result: KLCC 0 batting bonus points, RCC 8 bowling bonus points.

Ashley Tillett and Nick Fielden opened RCC's innings, scoring briskly until Nick (14) was bowled by Tom Sambrook at the end of over 5. RCC continued to score at about 5 runs per over, but before the end of his age-limited quota of six overs, Sambrook had also dismissed David Robinson and John Barr. So James Lewis arrived at the wicket with the score on 51-3 from 10.5 overs. James and Ashley took the score to 126 before James (41) was bowled trying to drive Phil Robinson. Ashley and Anish Patel reached 139 without further loss, Ashley scoring a very good 61 not out.

Full time result: KLCC 0 batting bonus points + 4 bowling bonus points = 4 points, RCC 30 points for the win.
