Radlett CC 2nd XI v Old Albanian on Sat 09 May 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 8 wkts

Match report James Lewis captained the 2nd XI for this game, because of Nick Fielden's absence on 1st XI duty. James duly won the toss, and asked Old Albanian CC 1st XI to field. The OA side contained three former RCC players - Graham Dill, who captained their team, Simon Gray and Jon Freedman, who were all made particularly welcome. A fourth former RCC player, Jon Smithers, was absent from the OA team because of injury.

The OA opening bowlers, Kwesi Roy and Matthew Corran, were quick and accurate, and after 10 overs, RCC had reached 26 for 3. Simon Randall was unlucky to lose his wicket by playing on, technically Bowled. He played a short, lifting ball down at his feet, used his bat to try to steer the ball away from his stumps, but only pushed it faster on its way.

The fourth wicket partnership between John Barr and James Lewis lasted beyond the opening bowlers' first spells. A total of seven RCC batsmen reached double figures, mostly off the OA change bowlers, but none of them were able to build a really big innings from this start. Ashley Tillett made the side's top score of 24. By the time that RCC's last man, Stuart Browne arrived at the crease, the score had reached only 129 for 9, and the OA opening bowlers were doing well in their second spells. However, Stuart and his partner, David Hegarty, enjoyed a productive partnership of 27 before Stuart was bowled for 13. David scored 12 not out. The final total was 156 all out off 39.3 overs. For reaching 155 runs, the last wicket partnership gave the side its only batting points, 2, doubled to 4 for batting first.

RCC's run rate was not particularly slow, but the total looked rather too small for comfort. Each of the five OA bowlers took at least one wicket, but the honours went to their two opening bowlers for total wickets, average runs per wicket and economy. Since the RCC innings had not lasted for its full allocation of 53 overs, the permitted length of the OA innings was increased from 47 to 60 overs.

Johnson Mafa and Stuart Browne kept the OA openers quiet for half a dozen overs, but the OA No 2, Kwesi Roy, gradually began to open his shoulders, sometimes stepping a couple of paces down the wicket to drive Johnson. When he fell LBW to Stuart Browne, he had scored 42 out of the 55 runs of the partnership. He was followed by Graham Dill, then by Jon Freedman, who both continued to look for runs. The OA No 1 batsman, Alf Rehman, played a less aggressive innings, but still finished with 46 not out. The OA innings reached 157 for 2 in 35 overs, with eight wickets and 25 overs to spare.

OA collected 30 points for their victory. Radlett collected two bowling points to add to their four batting points, a total of only six points from the game.
