Match report THE GAME OF THE HE WONT LETT US DOWN AND THE BALCONY BLUES

Sometimes low scoring games are classics and this was one of those as Radlett overcame a pumped up Holtwhites on Chairmans day at the club.

The weather was damp and cold and had started to change to sunshine as the game got closer. THe Holtwhites groundsman was still mowing the pitch as we arrived and the massive groundsheet (more of that later was still blowing in the wind).

The umpires got together and Matt and the Holtwhites skipper tossed and Matt lost. We were inserted on a green damp slow looking pitch. This was going to suit Holtwhites in a chase if the rains came. I will keep my thoughts about the umpires in my head as they made some strange decisions.

Tej and Matt strode to the wicket and made a cautious start with some good shots on a slow pitch and looking good so it was a surprise when Tej was bowled by Wilkes-Green for 10. This brought to the wicket the returning Akash Kadiwar (returning after 12 years) and he made a good looking 9 until he was LBW to the giant youth Freddie Sheehan, all 6 foot 6 of him at 16. Delon came and went as he was bowled by Walker and Matt had also followed Tej caught behind by the 15year old Dawe.

Freddie Wright and the returning Sahil Agarwal (After 5 years when he took 4 for 33) batted sensibly and took the score from 67 to 129 hitting out when needed but with good defence until they both fell to the returning Walker (after 20 overs!!!) as they fell in successive overs.

Rhys Kanbi and another 16 year old James Stevens-Jennings batted well and ran brilliantly until James hit one straight at Ebbs and Rueben was undone by Ashraf having survived the battle of the giants with Sheehan. 146 for 8 and we needed to up the ante and Rhys and Ross put on 21 (well Rhys did) and Ross supported him well until the excellent Ashraf bowled him and rhys went next over trying to force the ante.

During our innings it had rained for 8 minutes and the umpires took one over from each side. WHy it was not dark and no common was used. The only reason it took 8 minutes was because the cover a 325 metres squared sheet ran away with itself and carried one or two players as if they were wind surfing.

Another rain break for 20 minutes reduced the game to 46 overs.

165 all out was about 15 below par to me.

A pretty good tea was eaten courtesy of the amazing BBQ laid on by the holtwhites club and the veggie cheese burger was excellent followed by a magnificent 99 from the ice cream van.

The field is taken after the usual huddle and Matts white board having galvanised the team and Ross and Koby open up and koby soon had the useful Maheshi lbw and the doughty Abass and the mire expansive Mitru tried to keep Holtwhites in line with DLS not that is could be shown on their board much to the distress of the Umpires. Koby begins his last over and Abass tries a heave which catches the outside edge, gies towards Third man and swirls in the air and Akash takes a fabulous catch and its 29 for 2. holtwhites skipper Kashmiri enters the frey and looks like he is playing the long game until Chippy gets a ball to move in the air and move the stumps, 51 for 3. Its even stevens here at the moment. Rhys is asked to bowl at the Pavilion end with the Footballers getting louder and the Holtwhites 2nd XI also getting slightly inebriated. He immediately removes the obdurate Abass and bowled a really tight line in a magnificent spell which ended when his spell finished thanks to the Young Bowlers directive with 7 overs 2 maidens 1 for 16. He and Sahil were tightening the screws with sahil getting regular wickets and 61 for 4 becomes 94 for 7 as Sahil weaves his magic thanks to 2 Rosey catches and a good grab by Delon. The hat trick ball is a let down.

Young Sheehan and Mohammed are trying to inch their way back into the game with some big shots and good defence. Koby returns after Rhys’s spell and immediately bowls Mohammed with a Jaffa (the ball having been changed for an orange!!!)

This brings the Holtwhites embryo Dawe in his 2nd 1st team game to the crease and he shoes youthful ambition and slaps Delon around and with things getting really yight with the target now down to 160 Rosey brings himself on and bowls Dawe with a quicker one leaving the knife edge at 148 for 9.

Walker walks in at 11 and immediately hits Matt for 4 and the over ends at 152 for 9. Delon has one over to bowl and 8 to win. SHeehan gets a single and in shades of Edgbaston 2005 Delon gets his line slightly wrong Walker goes to hit to fine leg gets a hard glove on it and the youngest Triple threat (James stevens Jennings) takes a good leg side catch and an unbelievable game of cricket is over with Radlett victorious by 6 runs.

A great game with a great bunch of lads with a Western Terrace rumbling on the pavilion balcony and some good hospitality at the end. Hope their Chairmans evening was a success. It was good to see 200 people at a cricket/football club drinking eating and having fun. We used to do this.

Its tight in Div 2A as we are 6th in the table but on 227 points with top of the table Lutonians on 277 points and Abbots and Northwood on 262. 7 games to go and we can still get promoted.

Man of the match The returning Sahil Agarwal

TFC So hard this one but unluckily it has to go to Rueben for his drop in the 1st over

Champagne Moment The Holtwhites boys putting the covers on and one falling down and being dragged as if he was going wind surfing

RCC champagne moment – Rhys coming of age with some fine batting and some superb bowling
