Weybridge (Round 2) v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sun 09 May 2004 at
Radlett CC Lost 6 wickets
Match report
Stuart Browne opened his season with a typically miserly spell of seam bowling, but he could not prevent Radlett being bundled out of the Cockspur National Cup at Weybridge on Sunday.
Radlett mustered only 115 for eight off their 45 overs on a lively damp pitch, and Weybridge, the Surrey champions, won this first-round tie by six wickets.
Lack-lustre Radlett were left regretting they had not scored a couple of dozen more runs, as Browne sent down his nine overs for a paltry eight runs, and Weybridge struggled to score at two an over for their first 20 overs.
Further bad news was that Browne strained a thigh muscle, ruling him out of this Saturday's Home Counties league match at Basingstoke.
With his wedding due in July, Radlett are likely to see much less of their star bowler this summer.
It looked as though Radlett might surprise Weybridge until an over from fast-bowler Kervin Marc, costing 23, broke their grip.
Monte Lynch, the former Surrey and England batsman, suddenly cut loose against his short deliveries, helped by one blow that reaped seven runs when Marc attempted to run him out on the third run and conceded four overthrows.
Marc's six overs cost 40 runs, and the back-up bowling proved ineffective, though newcomer Paul O'Reilly picked up two wickets to go with his innings of 26 not out, the highest score of the Radlett innings.
Weybridge won an important toss, and their classy seam attack had Radlett in serious trouble.
The upper order failed to graft in awkward conditions, and it was left to O'Reilly, at number nine, and David Hanson to take the total past 100.
Last Saturday's opening league match against Oxford was rained off, and before their Weybridge visit Radlett had had four of their first six matches cancelled, leaving the side seriously short of match practice.
