Slough v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 17 May 2008 at 11.00 a.m.
Radlett CC Won By 5 wickets
Match report
A magnificent win at Slough saw Radlett put their season back on track. On a very overcast and damp day Shane Burger's men put together a team performance that will not easily be forgotten. This was their first every HCPCL Division 1 victory at Slough, the 2007 runners-up, 2005 and 2006 winners.
Radlett won the toss and elected to field in conditions that favoured seam bowling. Burger struck early with 3 wickets to leave Slough floundering at 81 for 4. However, Slough stabilised the situation with a 77 run partnership and eventually posted a respectable total of 235. Radlett's new recruit Paul Barker was the pick of the bowlers picking up 5-71 in 21.4 overs. This tally was one short of Tom Jenkins, Radlett's Herts keeper, who achieved 6 dismissals in the innings, a stunning 4 stumpings and 2 catches.
Rain interruptions then made life harder in reducing the number of overs available for the Radlett reply to just 46, the required run rate being in excess of five. And if that were not enough, they had to overcome the loss of a wicket in the very first over. James Lewis and Steve Lowe set about laying a foundation but were dismissed in quick succession reducing Radlett to 75 for 3.
Burger and Kabir Toor, then took up the challenge putting on a stand of 83 for the 4th wicket before Burger was bowled for 48. Toor shrugged off the loss of his captain and, ably assisted by Walker and Jenkins, lead the way to victory with a match winning 87 not out. It was Toor who, in the penultimate over, hit the winning runs, carving the Slough captain, Bobby Sher, for a boundary through the off side, to the rapturous acclaim from his team mates and supporters. Radlett had totally out played their opponents in all departments.
Shane Burger said after the game "What a fantastic win! It is our first ever win away to Slough and it took a real team effort. Every single person chipped in and I am proud of each and every member of the side. Kabir Toor batted with responsibility and maturity beyond his years and I am really chuffed for our new recruit Paul Barker who picked up 5/71 in a marathon spell in conditions that did not favour him. After last week's dismal performance against High Wycombe it is nice to bounce back with such a fantastic win against such quality opposition."
