Radlett CC 4th XI v Northchurch II on Sat 15 Aug 2015 at 1:00 pm
Radlett CC Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Fielding a much-depleted team, Radlett 4s managed to bat just 44 overs against 10-man, bottom-of-the-table Northchurch, gifting them their first win if the season. The fact that seven players were out caught tells the story of how wickets were thrown away, enabling the opposition to get away with the fact that they only had four front-line bowlers.

That Radlett got to 185 was due to a swash-buckling fifth-wicket partnership between Zahur Gitay (52) and Shon Alisha (31), plus useful contributions from the lower order. But the opposition skipper's gamble of bowling Radlett out using his four bowlers was allowed to succeed, bowlers five and six needing to bowl just four overs, costing 29 runs, before the composed Andrew Wright was adjudged lbw for 21.

Northchurch batted slowly, Gitay getting a wicket first over and bowling his first spell of five overs for just two runs. The Rev Javaid Iqbal was also impressive, showing few signs of the rust that would have accumulated since he last played two years ago.

First change bowler Dylan Gunasekera, making his debut at just 13 years of age, then showed impressive control with his dangerous leg-spin, but it was off-spinner Michael Nel who broke the second-wicket partnership with an excellent caught and bowled. A sharp catch by keeper Warne in Nel's next over had Northchurch on 53-3 with 23 overs already gone. The fourth-wicket partnership took things on to 97, but wickets by Lague and Nel put Radlett in control at 103-5 in the 35th over.

13 runs taken off the 37th over provided much-needed impetus to the Northchurch innings, but Radlett missed the chance to break the partnership when Warne was unable to gather a quick return from Alisha with one of the pair well short of his ground. Hope was renewed when Lague bowled nr 7 with the score on 169 in the 47th over, but 10 were scored off the 48th, Gitay's final over, before he had the nr 6 caught at point by Alisha for 30, making it 179-7. Three dot balls and a wicket from Lague brought the last-wicket pair together, who scored a two to make it 5 required off the last over, to be bowled by Nel. With the first ball whacked to the mid-wicket boundary the scores were tied and two balls later it was all over.

Radlett gained 16 points, to bring them within two points of safety, but will feel that, even with a depleted side, 30 should have been taken. The match next week against Broxbourne, sitting just above them in the table, is now a must-win match.
