Bushey II v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 06 Jun 2015 at 1:00 pm
Radlett CC Lost by 119 runs

Match report By our Special (in so many ways) Correspondent:

Radlett failed to reproduce the euphoria of victory the previous week, losing by over 100 runs to a strong Bushey team.

I’ve never been to this ground before. It is set in a curiously quiet corner of Watford, which looking in one direction appears like the Elyssian Fields, and from the other the slave pits of Mordor. They had suffered flooding the previous year (but no plague of locusts or raining frogs) and the square and some of the outfield had to be re-laid. Hence the pitch had peculiar properties of which local knowledge would be a great advantage.

Having been set 239 to win, we all felt that was achievable, and on another day, with a bit of luck and a bit more nous, we would have done, and will do in the future.

Starting out, the Bushey captain and opener rattled along to 50 out of the first 65, showing real class. Chris King and Amy Price actually bowled well, but the rate was six an over. However, when Price had the other opener lbw, and Ingram and Hardy slowed the run rate to a trickle, that great cliché, pressure, was applied and, at 150 – 7, we felt we could catch them on a decent wicket that kept low.

But we lost control again and Bushey ended on 238 – 8 from their 50 overs. Ajay Gupta couldn’t replay the 6 for thirty odd of a couple of weeks ago and latterly took a bit of tap, but the bowlers applied themselves manfully (and womanfully), with Ingram finishing with 4 – 22 from his ten.

In the history of evolution of cricket, there occurs a very occasional step change. Such as the change from underarm to roundarm bowling, or the use of the leg side to score runs – it was deemed ungentlemanly in the C19th to score runs on the leg side. On Saturday, Kevin O’Donnell showed us that you can perform an effective leg-side stumping without the use of one’s hands. He insists this was a deliberate tactic. We were later unsurprised when a pig landed in the middle of the outfield, having flown in from a nearby farm.

Chasing 239, Ingram started out like a banshee, hitting four proper boundaries from the first over. But he was out lbw to a shooter in the following over, and although we had a decent batting side, we were never in the hunt.

Hemant Morjoria batted sensibly and untroubled to topscore with 31, and the elegant Simon Randall got a good Yorker to end his stay. He looked ineluctably classy, and it is always a surprise when he gets out.

TJ, Softy, Vikram and Ajay all got a start, but couldn’t quite stick in. And we have a new ace in the hole - Shon Alishah has joined our ranks, and is a potential matchwinner with a “Can Do” attitude that is refreshing and wonderful. If you bowled him a grand piano he would try and hit it out of the ground and call for more. Unfortunately he didn’t come off either, so we subsided to 119 all out, which was a waste, because we could have hung around for more batting points.

Four defeats out of five games is a poor return, but there are still two teams below us in the Division and there are signs that that this team can have a very respectable season. However, I do have to say that this team is a pleasure to captain, if only temporarily, and we will have better days on the field, if not in the bar.
