Redbourn III v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 19 Jul 2014 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 3 wickets

Match report What do the club chairman, a YP manager and 9 YP's make up? Answer: the Radlett CC 5th team. This motley crew arriving at Redbourn Recreation Ground with clouds all around, and a forecast of thunderstorms, Radlett 5ths were only hopeful of getting in a game at all.

Skipper for the day, Raj promptly won the toss and inserted Redbourn in on a green wicket, with what looked like a fast outfield. Redbourn batted sensibly, and saw off Radletts opening pair of Luca and Chris. However these two had limited their scoring and Redbourn were 28-0 off 8 when Jack and Josh came on. Jack immediately put the frighteners on them, with a few sharp deliveries, however it was Josh who struck first. Redbourn remained steadfast, reaching the drinks at 46-1 after 15. Immediately after Josh struck again, but Redbourns top order did not panic, and continued to accumulate runs, and slowly accelerating, reaching 100-2 in the 26th over.

A clever change by Raj saw Chris brought back on, and he got a wicket in his first over. Wickets then started tumbling at regular intervals, but in the hot and humid conditions the seamers started to fade, and runs also started to flow, so Raj brought himself and Rahil on to bowl. Runs continued to flow, and eventually despite the wickets, Redbourn reached 201 off their allotted 47 overs, proving what we suspected, that they were a good batting side.

Over tea this looked like a daunting target, but following recent batting performances we remained hopeful. However, hopes were soon dashed as Redbourns opening bowlers cut through our top order, leaving Radlett on a precarious 43-5 in the 15th over. In went the club Chairman with orders to try and build a partnership with youngster Luca, and get us back into the game. The two did just that, and Radlett also reached 100 in the 26th. However they had lost 3 extra wickets. However the old and the young seemed to have an appetite for more, and they continued to score and accelerate, and reached their 100 partnership in 20 overs. Radlett were now feeling buoyant, however in the next over Tony was Run Out, leaving Radlett needing 44 off 8 with a U13 and an U14 at the crease. Radlett need not have worried. Rahill immediately got stuck in, and a quickfire 22 off 18 backed up Luca at the other end. So despite being Run Out late, Radlett eventually got the runs with 3 balls to spare.

Man of the match Luca Ignatius for an unbeaten, fabulous, and mature ton. However it must be mentioned that our top scorer was 14, and our two top wicket takers were 12 and 13.

A fabulous performance by the boys young and slightly less young, and a result I have been shouting about ever since. Radlet 5ths currently stand 2nd in the table.
