Orpington Nomads v Radlett CC Women's Super 8's on Sun 07 Sep 2014 at 12:30 pm
Radlett CC Won by 2 wickets

Match report The penultimate game of the Radlett Women's Southern League campaign brought the two best teams in the Championship division together for a crucial title decider. The maths was simple. If Radlett won they would be crowned champions with a game to spare, while a win for the home side (Orpington Nomads) would keep things in the balance for another week.

On an overcast afternoon with a soft, slightly damp, and slow pitch underfoot, bowling first would be the captain's preference and that was precisely what Alexis Mannion elected for after winning the toss.

Mannion (0-13) also decided to take the new ball in an opening bowling partnership with Sian Ruck. The pair did a fantastic job of restricting the run rate. After 10 overs Orpington had posted just 12 runs, albeit with all 10 wickets still in hand. The first bowling change, with Anje Lague (2-21) replacing Mannion, resulted in the first wicket with Caroline Barrs hitting her wicket whilst trying to make room to cut. Ruck (1-19) also got in the act bowling the other Orpington opener, Sinead Goodden. At the 15 over drinks break the home side total stood at 18 for 2, albeit with ex-England international Bev Nicholson now at the crease.

Nicholson was clearly in no mood to hang around and despite seeing two more batting partners come and go (both for ducks) she finally found a willing partner in Sarah Clarke and the pair set about taking the game to Radlett. Their partnership of 63 came at nearly a run-a-ball and included some belligerent stroke-play, especially from Nicholson, who brought up her fifty in just 44 balls.

However, in the first over after the second drinks break, a pivotal caught and bowled from Kathy Morley (1-29) finally saw Nicholson (53) back in the pavilion. It was then left to Sarah Clarke (44) to steer the Orpington innings and she put on 53 runs with Christine Poth (20) before being run out in the penultimate over just short of her own half-century. The home side finished on a competitive total of 155 for 7 from their 45 overs.

In reply the Radlett openers Catherine McNeill and Hannah Smith put on 38 for the first wicket before Smith (14) was bowled by Nicholson in the 12th over. McNeill (38) added another 26 runs to the team total with Anna Harris before becoming Nicholson's second victim. Twenty overs down and Radlett were delicately poised at 65 for 2 requiring 91 more to win.

It was at this point in the innings that the pressure began to tell on Radlett. Within 7 overs they had lost Harris (harshly adjudged run-out for 10), Kathy Morley (1) and Katie Pankhurst (0). 65 for 2 had quickly become 85 for 5. This brought Mannion to the crease to join Chloe Jackson and a ship-steadying 48 run partnership from 44 balls took the total to 133, before Mannion (16) was caught behind by Goodden off the bowling of Hazel Lovegrove.

Lovegrove then took a second wicket in as many balls as new bat Sian Ruck holed out to mid-off without troubling the scorecard. Radlett 133 for 7. Two overs later Chloe Jackson (49) pushed at a wide full-toss to be caught in the covers a run shy of fifty. The score now 142 for 8 and the tension around the ground was palpable.

Radlett, however, where not to be outdone and their strength in depth was demonstrated for all to see as Anje Lague (8*) and Laura Sandy (8*) calmly steered the Radlett innings home with nearly 5 overs to spare. Had there ever been any doubt?

The victory for Radlett meant that the division title was now secured, and only a final match against Brighton this coming Sunday stands between them and securing a second consecutive unbeaten Southern League season. Radlett should now see themselves playing in the Southern League Premier Division next season - one of, if not the highest levels of Women's club cricket in the country - a well deserved reward for all the hard work put in, both on and off the pitch, by a very talented squad of players and managers.
