Radlett CC Lost by 25 runs
Match report
With the competing requirements of fielding two teams on Sunday the Radlett Women's XI were forced to take a mostly inexperienced North London League side to top of the table Ickenham in a bid to maintain their unbeaten record. Once again Radlett could only muster 10 players, which included 3 Under 13's and a worrying lack of established batting pedigree among its ranks.
Skipper, Kanchana Gamage, was naturally keen to win the toss and insert the opposition into bat, and she duly did so. Subsequently she was able to hand the new ball to her regular opening seam pairing of Katie Pankhurst and Amy Price. Both bowled first over maidens with Pankhurst especially using all of her 5'11 frame to get the ball delivered at pace into some very uncomfortable areas for the opening batting pair. In her 2nd over a fast rising delivery was fended off from the body into the waiting hands of Alice Lawman in the covers and Ickenham were 0 for 1.
This set the tone for much of the Ickenham innings. Some excellent bowling and sharp fielding from the 10 Radlett players contained the home side throughout. Pankhurst completed a ferocious 6 over spell, conceding just 8 runs, and the good work was continued by medium pacers Alice Lawman (1-17 from 6) and Sarah Evans (3-10 from 5). Both hit a consistent line and length to further restrict the run rate, with Evans taking 3 wickets in her second over as Ickenham looked to try and force the issue. Two run-out dismissals were also taken by Radlett as Pankhurst, then Gamage, delivered throws allowing wicket-keeper, Samantha Battman, to whip off the bails with the batsmen well short of their ground. Even some late hitting from Ickenham was not enough to get their total beyond three figures as they concluded their 30 over innings on 99 for 7.
Under normal circumstances a chase of 100 would have been a relatively simple proposition for Radlett, and openers Pankhurst and Price made a positive start bringing up 40 for no loss from 10 overs. Pankhurst looked in good touch picking off any loose deliveries while Price played a solid anchoring role. The change to spin eventually did for Price (7) as she played too early on a slow, looping delivery and popped up a catch to short leg. Battman joined Pankhurst and the pair refocused on the job in hand. If both could continue to occupy the crease the game was surely theirs for the taking. Disaster struck in the 14th over when Pankhurst went down to sweep an innocuous leg side delivery only to lift a top edge catch to fine leg which the fielder juggled twice, but ultimately held. Her innings of 30 had consisted of 28 runs from boundaries, but the dismissal would prove crucial.
The next pairing of Battman and Lawman, while both well capable of getting the job done with the bat, also gave their wickets away to catches for 10 and 8 respectively, and Ickenham had broken through into the tail. From here the home side simply didn't relent and no other Radlett player was able to significantly trouble the scorer. A capitulation to 74 all out followed and for the first time in 30 matches a Radlett Women's XI had lost!
The defeat puts Ickenham firmly in pole position for the Division A title. While Radlett can still come out on top if they win their remaining 4 matches, a further defeat, or any matches lost to rain will put paid to their challenge.
Though thoroughly dejected by the loss the Radlett players must ultimately look back with immense pride on the run of victories that the squad has compiled, and how, with a much weakened team, they pushed a table-topping Ickenham side to the brink. They will look to shake off the defeat at home against Wanstead on Sunday.
