Hampstead v Radlett CC Women's Super 8's on Sun 27 Jul 2014 at 9:30 am
Radlett CC Won by 16 runs
Match report
Radlett took an under strength 10-player squad to Hampstead on Sunday for a repeat of the North London League fixture from a week previously. Captain, Kanchana Gamage lost the toss for the second week in a row and was again asked to bat first.
With a lack of established senior batting down the order it was considered essential that openers Katie Pankhurst and Anna Harris set a solid foundation. However, Pankhurst, who has been on good form with the bat recently, was dismissed in the 3rd over by a peach of a ball from Jess Black. A shaky start. The key to the innings was now going to be for the incoming batsmen to form partnerships with Harris, and they did so with aplomb. Samantha Battman (16), Natasha Martin (29) and Alice Lawman (14*) proved the perfect foil for Harris' elegant stroke-play as the scoreboard continued to tick over at a good rate throughout the 30 overs. Some profligate bowling from Hampstead also aided the Radlett cause as they struck 19 boundaries and were gifted a further 29 runs in extras. Harris carried her bat throughout the innings with an unbeaten 66, which included 8 fours and a six.
The final total of 158 for 4 was Radlett's highest 30 over score of the season, and with a solid bowling attack at her disposal Gamage was confident she could steer the side to their 29th consecutive win, despite only having 10 players to cover the gaps in the field.
The usual seam pairing of Pankhurst (1-16) and Amy Price (0-22) were handed the new ball and both bowled tidy spells on a hard, dry pitch that offered more to the batting side. Pankhurst made the first breakthrough by removing the off stump of Sian Culley for 11. However, Culley's opening partner, Hampstead skipper Lucy Horitz, was starting to look comfortable and was adjusting well to pace on the ball. Gamage therefore turned to Harris and Lawman for a slower variety of attack. While Horitz continued to play the ball nicely the tactic proved very effective on her batting partners. Leg spinner, Harris, took two wickets in her first over (one a superb running catch by Natasha Martin), while Lawman's first four overs went for just 5 runs as the required run rate crept up toward 8 per over. Lawman, bowling her first overs for Radlett, was eventually rewarded with a deserved maiden wicket as Pankhurst held a good catch in the covers. She picked up another the following over and would finish with excellent figures of 2-20. Harris also claimed another victim to return 3-26 from her 6 overs.
Horitz (72*), however, continued to be a thorn in Radlett's side throughout the innings. While she rode her luck on occasion she almost single-handedly kept Hampstead in the game and finally found, in Jess Black (20*), a partner who could stay with her at the end. To their credit this partnership got the home side to within 16 runs of the Radlett score, but overhauling the total was simply a bridge too far as they finished up on 142-6 from their 30 overs.
The joy of bringing up the 29th consecutive victory for Radlett was soon magnified as news came through that the previously unbeaten North London League leaders, Ickenham, had lost both sides of a double header to Old Actonians and Hemel Hempstead respectively. While Ickenham still maintain top position they only hold a narrow points advantage over Radlett and have played 3 matches more. The two sides meet on Sunday in a match that could now determine the destination of the Division A title.
