Hemel Hempstead v Radlett CC Women's Super 8's on Sun 08 Jun 2014 at 2:00 pm
Radlett CC Won by 28 runs
Match report
The Radlett Womens squad were calling on players old and new to field two teams over the weekend as both North London and Southern League matches were to be played away. Undeterred by the challenge of facing the experienced Hemel Hempstead side with only 10 players, skipper Kanchana Gamage sent out Radlett stalwart Hayley Arrol to face the opening bowlers partnered by youngster Chloe Frame. The two set about seeing off the openers and Arrol, still returning from injury, showed great composure as she worked the ball off of the stumps to get runs on the board.
In the blistering heat Hemel were bowling accurately and the pressure was building as Radlett reached the first drinks break with only 30 runs posted. The first wicket fell shortly after with Frame pinned leg before by Pearson for 6. That sent Amy Price to the crease, but she was soon bowled for 0.
In at number 4 was Samantha Battman, batting for the first time this season with a heavily strapped broken finger. The new pairing rotated the strike well before Arrol was given LBW for 24 hard earned runs. Hemel were looking comfortably in control as Abbie Sullivan was caught for 4 not long after Arrol’s dismissal. However, Battman then struck up a steady partnership with Laura Gurney, punishing the slower balls, driving for boundaries and pushing for runs between the wickets. Hemel were visibly frustrated as the run rate increased. With Radlett’s total now over 100 following the second drinks break it was a blow to lose Gurney, run out for 4, but she had occupied valuable time at the crease in partnership with the free scoring Battman.
Battman was joined by Emily Grist before a tired swing finally put smiles on the Hemel players faces as Battman was caught off a top edge having accumulated 61 runs. This knock, her maiden half century for Radlett, included 8 boundaries.
Skipper Gamage was unfortunate to fall foul of another LBW decision but Radlett still had Grist's firepower as she smashed 5 boundaries for a total of 27 not out in the last few overs. This late hitting moved Radlett to a competitive final total of 145 for 7 from their 30 overs.
With the sun still beating down it was now up to Hemel to chase and the opening bats of Ward and Tyson faced the blistering pace of Arrol and the swing of Frame. It wasn’t long before the Radlett bowlers each picked up a wicket. Arrol took the bails of Ward (7) with a crunching delivery before Frame dismissed Tyson (9) caught and bowled. It wasn’t all plain sailing though as Lou Pearson took to the crease for Hemel - a quality player with an impressive track record of scoring big runs. However, Pearson could not find her usual form and struggled to put bat to ball throughout her stay at the crease. Despite not claiming a wicket, Amy Price peppered Pearson with deliveries of great line and length with multiple LBW appeals going unrewarded. The 10 player Radlett field were forced to work hard when Hemel did connect and Gamage cleverly worked the field to close the gaps and ensure that individual player’s strengths were utilised.
Communication breakdowns led to three run outs during the Hemel innings, including the key wicket of Pearson (29) and an impressive direct hit from Gamage in the field to later dismiss Kelly Read for 7. Hemel did find a reprieve in their number 6 bat Kezia Hasall, a 15 year old who showed both resilience and flare as she worked towards an impressive 47 not out. Her contribution meant that Radlett had to remain alert in the field and could not become complacent. However, it all proved a little too late for the Hemel side and the game ended in a hard fought, well-deserved 28 run victory for Radlett.
