North Enfield II v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 19 Jul 2014 at 1.00 p.m.
Match was Drawn
Match report
At 34-5, chasing 222, Radlett looked down and out, but a battling partnership of 136 between Ramitha Meepagama and Matthew Bell saved the day and garnered six valuable batting points, giving Radlett 14 in total for their first draw of the season.
North Enfield won the toss and batted on what was a slightly green, but firm, pitch that turned out to be fairly lifeless. Opening bowlers Ingram and Fabray were tidy enough, but unthreatening, and the Enfield openers looked untroubled as they brought up the 50 partnership in the 15th over.
However, Luke Pace was firing on all cylinders and, in his second over, cleaned up the nr1. Jay Prohit was struggling to find a threatening length, but in his fourth over induced a top edge, Jonathan Grant scampering across well to take the catch behind the keeper, to make it 64-2 in the 19th over.
Purohit continued to bowl too short and provide easy pickings, whilst Paice ran out of puff after just four overs, allowing the pressure to be released as Rami Meeps provided some easy-paced buffet bowling.
Hemant Morjaria replaced Meeps and was unlucky to have a catch dropped in the deep, but it was Purohit who finally broke the 67-run partnership, inducing another lofted catch. The score was now 131-3 in the 33rd over.
With his spinners proving expensive, Warne turned first to Fabray, who, in his second over, bowled the nr 1 for 65 then, next over, repeated the trick on the equally dangerous nr 5.
At the other end, Warne introduced young medium-pacer James McCullum, who settled in immediately to bowl a consistent off-stump line and induce a well-taken catch in the deep with just his fourth ball.
With Fabray bowling full and straight at decent pace, the pair kept a lid on things, McCullum forcing another catch in the deep and Fabray hitting the stumps again, until the declaration came at the end of the 51st over.
Anything over 200 is always a challenge, even with a short boundary on one side, and Radlett got off to the worst possible start as Phil Cooper chipped one to square-leg in the third over.
Warne came in at nr 3 and advanced to double figures before getting the thinnest of edges to the pacy opening bowler. Ingram was then bowled next over by the left-arm pace bowler who, five balls later, welcomed late call-up Jonathan Grant to 4s cricket by breaking his middle stump.
McCullum and Meeps steadied the ship for a while, batting sensibly for nine overs against decent pace bowling, but McCullum eventually lost patience and edged a swipe outside off-stump to the keeper.
Matt Bell had not played yet this season, but his first scoring shot – a fine on-drive for 4 – showed he had not lost his touch. At the other end, Meeps was showing fine discipline, picking the right ball to score from. Together, the duo built an impressive partnership, firstly taking the total to some sort of respectability then into bonus point territory.
Victory was never an option after such a poor start and Warne was determined not to lose to a side that had annoyed him by refusing to provide players to move the sightscreens when their left-hand/right-hand combination was at the wicket. So careful accumulation was the order of the day. Rami brought up his (first?) 50 and ploughed on to make 82 before being bowled in the 46th over. Fabray was promoted in a bid to try and secure another couple of batting points, but in his usual feckless way (at least for the 4s) was stumped second ball, in the 47th over. Hemant Morjaria was then run out taking a tight single in the 49th and final over, as Bell sought to get the strike, with Bell chipping his final ball to point, where the opposing skipper dropped a simple catch, leaving him not out for a fine 68.
So, 14 points rescued from a match that had seemed lost. The team had bowled ok and fielded well in the heat and deserved to get something from the game.
