Radlett CC 4th XI v Holtwhites Trinibis II on Sat 05 Jul 2014 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 8 wickets

Match report Skipper Warne had to find four replacement players from those selected, but felt he had managed to pull together a reasonable side, albeit never having seen three of them play before. His confidence proved ill-founded!

Put in to bat, Radlett 4s struggled to cope with the seam movement obtained by the Holtwhite’s opening bowlers and were all out for just 101 in 34 overs. Indeed, if it were not for a belligerent 30 by Richard Hardy, coming in at nr 6, the score would have been even worse, 101 marking a recovery from 36-6.

Consolation of sorts can be taken from the fact that, for the most part, the batsmen tried to apply themselves and were got out, rather than getting themselves out.

Things started to go awry in just the second over, Dom Ingram being adjudged lbw off an inside edge, then young Anna Harris fending off a bouncy delivery to gulley.

Colin Warne and Neil Cornwell both looked sound and had added 20, when Cornwell edged to the keeper for 14. Debutant Geg Ellingham soon followed, for 0, then, next over, Warne was bowled by one that came back through the gate, leaving the side on 32-5. TJ came and went, for 2, paving the way for the largest partnership of the innings between Hardy and Ramitha Meepagama.

Dealing mainly in 4s, the pair added 45 in ten overs, making the most of the change bowling, until Hardy mishit the spinner to square-leg, with the score on 80. Meeps went immediately afterwards for 14, but debutant leg-spinner Syan Patel looked very accomplished with the bat and added 21 with Ed Saunders before being caught. Saunders then offered the seventh catch of the innings, rightly deciding to chance his arm.

Runs on the board, as they say, are always an advantage and, at 19-2, Radlett were making a good fist of the fight. Dom Ingram was bowling tightly and, in the eighth over, pinned the nr 1 plumb in front. Neil Cornwell then entered the attack and, with his third ball, induced a lobbed catch to TJ at shortish mid-on. Game on?

Cornwell was building up an impressive head of steam off just four paces and a sharp inside edge took keeper Warne by surprise. If that chance had been taken, who knows what the outcome might have been. Spared a life, nr 4 Shah hit out at pretty much everything and raced to 70 not out, with all but four runs scored in boundaries, as Cornwell tried to blast him out.

At the other end, Ingram had been replaced by Harikaran, but his two overs proved disastrous, being smashed for 23. Debutant leg-spinner Patel almost broke the partnership with a couple of cunning, double-bouncing balls, but it was now too late the affect the result. The score had gone from 20-2 at the end of the ninth over to 105 in just eleven more overs.
