Match report
It was a warm, bright Summers evening and the Radlett u13 traveled to Abbots Langley to contest the Quarter Final game.
The team had won the last 6 matches in a row, and were confident of progressing, all the elements were in place, Debs had her cool bag (cheese and marmite sarnies, since you ask), Fran had her place in the Sun, no sleeping bag required today, I had 2 sharpened pencils and a rubber, and Raj had his special White track-suit top on, truly no stone was left un-turned.
Abbots won the toss and choose to bowl, James and Abhay strode purposely to the crease, a hush settled, the birds sang, the bees buzzed and Sun shone…………...
Abbots were bowling a tight line and length and backed this up with some sharp out-cricket and the Radlett boys were taking a good look before chancing their arm.
James hit a couple of very good looking straight 4’s and Abhay who was playing every ball on it merits, also found the boundary a couple of times in the early overs. James was bowled for 16, by one that kept a little low and looked genuinely surprised as the bails flew off. Freddie joined Abhay and while Abbots were bowling well, the scoreboard ticked over. Abhay retired on 31, always nice to score against your previous Club and he received a good ovation. Freddie was finally run out for 25, a mix up with Rahil and Radlett were 82-2, with 6 overs to go, and eyeing a pretty good score.
The run rate had fallen somewhat and when Rahil perished lbw for 4, it was left to and Maaz and Edward to try and score some quick runs. Maaz caught swinging for 6, as was Edward soon after for 8, and with overs running out Marcus and Joe both were both out trying to push the score along. Dillan and Max managed 8 off the final over and Radlett closed on 116-7 off the 20 overs. It was a defendable total, but it felt a few runs light and so it proved to be.
Abbots sent in the 2 largest 13 year old boys on Earth, it was literally men vs boys, not saying that their top 3 were large, but they all looked like an albino Hulks!!
Freddie opened the bowling and was smashed to the boundary for 4 off his first ball and to be honest Radlett were under the cosh from thereon. Giant number 2 was well caught by James off Freddie, but this only brought his big brother to the crease. Maaz, Freddie and James were all struggling to get any real control and the scoreboard rattled along. Abbots had reached 42 off 6 overs when Giant 1 was excellently caught one handed by George off Maaz for 24, he stomped off the pitch leaving, inch deep shoe prints in the out-field.
Abbots sent in a normal sized 13 year old, but the runs still flowed as Giant number 3 was hitting freely. Radlett have fielded better and once again gave away too many wides (11), however in mitigation, I think that the bowlers were trying a little too hard, and consequently lost a little in accuracy. Giant 3 retired on 30, but the dye was cast and the normal size batsman, continued to find the gaps and also retired at 32, Abbots secured the winning runs with 13 balls to spare.
While its always disappointing to lose, the boys can be pleased that they improved on last year, by reaching the Quarter-Finals and everyone has contributed during the season and all have improved as players. The spirit in the squad has been really great, and all the boys get on well together. Hopefully this group can stay together and look to push on next season.
Meanwhile we still have Sunday mornings until the 4th of August and there will be some intra-club matches coming up.
