Shenley Village v Radlett CC U13 on Wed 26 Jun 2013 at 6:00 pm
Radlett CC Won 6 wickets
Match report
The circus that is the Radlett U13’S made the short trip up the hill to Shenley’s picturesque ground. last evening for the last league game of the season.
The boys were focused on winning this local derby, the Coach was focused on getting himself and his son there, the Scorer was focused on his bagel and beer, and some of the Mums were very focused on pouring as much wine down their necks as was polite.
Because of Busheys shock win against Harpenden, Radlett were probably playing for 3rd place, but
a win would put pressure on Bushey and Harpenden to win their final games to secure a top two finish.
Shenley were shot out for 12 last time and were looking to put in a more respectable performance this time out.
They batted first and James opened the bowling. He kindly ensured that they almost passed their previous total in his first over, it was probably his sloppiest effort this season, but these things happen.
Maaz opened with a Maiden and although the scoreboard ticked over, not many runs were coming off the bat during the first few overs. Maaz had Tom well caught by the sub fielder and this brought Will Thompson to the wicket. He and Tom Fuller took the score to 31 before Tom was clean bowled by Maaz for 14. George had replaced James and kept things tight and when Max had Freddie bowled for a duck in his first over Shenley were 41-3.
Will was looking well set, but cometh the hour, cometh the man…..Joe was tossed the ball and embarked on a one man demolition mission. He had Will LBW off his 2nd ball, his 2nd over was a double wicket Maiden, both batsmen bowled and when he took a wicket with the 1st ball of his third over he was on a hat-trick and Shenley were tottering at 65-7. The hat-trick was avoided and he finished with 4 overs, 1 maiden, 4-18!!
James and Ed combined to run out the number 9 and Joe and Rahil ran out the number 10.
Sam Vance played the innings of his season and finished last man out for 38, having played some great shots. He was caught by, who else, Joe, off Maaz in the final over . Shenley had set Radlett 103 to win.
I was all for putting Joe in to open, it was clearly his day, but saner(?) heads prevailed and Abhay and James opened the innings.
Abhay had made a tidy 11, when he was adjudged stumped in the 4th over. James was doing his best to make up for his bowling and was hitting the ball very cleanly, he was dropped on 29, but finally retired on 33, his last shot about an inch off going for 6.
Rahil held his end up well, but was bowled by one that kept very low for 8 and Sam perished in the same way after a couple of balls without troubling the scorer.
Rahul and Maaz were playing well and Maaz retired on 32, after hitting 5 fours in a very good looking knock. Rahul and Max supplied the normal Radlett comedy run out with the finishing
line in sight and it was left to Rahul to hit the winning runs in the last over.
A tight finish, but Radlett were always just ahead and with batting to come never really looked in trouble…honest.
Creditable performances all round particularly, James (with the bat), Maaz, Rahul, George, but Joe was the stand out performance for his bowling/fielding. All the lads deserve credit for coming back from 2 early defeats to win 5 games in row and qualify comfortably for the quarter finals.
The most important thing to work on is the extras, we concede far too many wides and over throws,
21 in total yesterday. For example Shenley only donated 3 to our cause. Better teams will not let us get away with giving them that much of a head start.
The Quarters will take place the week off the 7th, so have your wine, bagels and blankets at the ready……
Coaches Comment: A great win by the boys, but I am still not happy with the number of extras being conceded. We should have chased 80 odd, but we managed to gift 22 extras which just isn't good enough at this level.
Great batting from James, Maaz and Rahul. And a dream performance from Joe D to record his best bowling figures for Radlett. Looking forward to a better bowling performance in the QF's.
