Match report Evening Standard Challenge Trophy

Lordswood 202-9 (50 overs)
Radlett 155 all out ( 37.3 overs)

Lordswood won by 47 runs

In a rematch of the 2003 final of the same competition, Lordswood gained some small measure of revenge for thier defeat at the Oval by knocking Radlett out in this second round clash. The Kent Premier League outfit were able to include their Leicestershire pace bowler David Masters and his father, veteran seamer Kevin, won a vital toss and unsurprisingly opted to bat first on a worn pitch which had been used the previous day.

It was slow going early on as the pitch revealed its inconsistent nature in both pace and bounce, factors that were only to get worse during the days play. Simon Jackson struck the first blow, claiming Lockhart to a fine catch by veteran keeper David Hanson, before Haydn Smith's left arm spin, entering the attack early on, claimed 2 quick wickets as both Masters and Sandhu holed out to Kabir Toor patrolling the short boundary at long off. Thereafter, it became a war of attrition as Radlett's 3 spinners, Smith , Toor and Crocker all found extravagant turn but bowled without much luck, Crocker being the pick bowling his 10 over allocation through for just 25 runs, whilst Toor claimed 2 wickets to go with his 2 earlier catches and a later run out. Jackson (3-46) and Gareth Berg (1-18) both completed their 10 overs with fine late spells, using all their skills and variations towards the death to restrict the total to 202-9, which represented a good score on the mottled and wearing pitch.

In reply, Radlett's openers Nick Hampton and skipper Dan Chippeck started in positive fashion, but when Chippeck (16) fell edging an attempted cut it precipitated a collapse as the middle order failed to deal with the inconsistent bounce and deteriorating nature of the pitch. Hampton battled on grafting out a determined 30 before edging behind to leave Radlett in deep trouble at 77-6. Youngsters Ashley Tillett and Mike Crocker combined to steady the ship, and they performed admirably in the circumstances before Tillet fell for 18, which brought Simon Jackson to the crease. The burly seamer announced his arrival with a huge hooked 6 first ball before following that with a driven 4 and another maximum smashed high over the mid wicket fence. The following over , after Crocker nudged a single, Jackson continued his rampage with two further sixes, one smeared over the sight screen and onto the roof of the near by sports centre. The carnage brought David Masters back into the attack, and after Jackson had despatched him for a fifth maximum, he fell going for a sixth and only just falling short to be caught on the deep square leg boundary for 36 made off just 10 balls. Thereafter the innings was wrapped up in quick time as Radlett were dismissed for 155 to finish 47 runs short.

Radlett skipper Dan Chippeck commented:" It was always going to be a difficult game for us, a long away trip to a strong premier league team, and we probably were not quite at our best with bat or ball. nor in the field, and they got an above par score on a pitch that, quite frankly, was sub standard for an important cup match. The toss was always going to be vital in the prevailing conditions and losing it was symptomatic on a day where we didnt have the rub of the green. Nonetheless, it was good exeperience for some of our younger lads, whilst I'd hope that defeat in this competition would allow us to redouble our efforts in the Home Counties Premier League without the distraction of a lot of Sunday cup cricket".
