Codicote v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 15 Jun 2013 at 1:00 pm
Radlett CC Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
For the first time this season, Radlett 4s looked like they had a proper batting line-up, but the failure of anyone from the top order to go on and make a big score, plus mindless batting by the lower order, caused the side to slump to yet another heavy defeat.
Put in after losing the toss, Radlett lost Dominic Ingram with the score on 11, in the fifth over. The bowling was tight (wicket-taker Lacy bowling his first four overs as maidens), but young Jack Cox and skipper Colin Warne ran their singles well and, taking full toll of the odd bad ball, took the score to 74 before Cox edged former Shenley star Jamile Aldarraji to slip in his first over.
Codicote’s left-arm spinner had been getting appreciable turn and bowling a good line. Facing him required care, but Colin Warne was too tentative in playing a push off his legs and fell to a good low catch, close in on the leg-side.
Two overs later, with the score on 82-3, the rain arrived. Codicote were sitting at the edge of the BBC’s radar picture and although the rain was heavy, play was able to resume after an hour, each side losing 9 overs.
Phil Cooper and Bhavin Kakkad continued to find it hard going, but were just starting to up the pace when a mix-up saw Cooper run out for 23 in the 32nd over. Enter the swashbuckling Gitesh Patel, who, with three 4s and consecutive straight 6s, smashed 25 off 20 deliveries before tamely giving catching practice to second slip.
Cue yet another tail-end collapse. Ignoring skipper Warne’s pleas to ensure all the remaining overs were used, Zed Gitay was lbw for his third golden duck of the season, Kakkad was caught lofting one to long-on, debutant Arumainayagam Harikaran was clean bowed slogging, Charlie Randall lofted his second delivery into the covers and Darren Fabray skied his first delivery to mid-wicket. 140-5 had become 143 all out in just 17 deliveries. Moreover, Codicote had been gifted a valuable extra 3 overs.
Openers Aldarraji and Richards scored at a good pace, helped by some lollipop deliveries from Fabray. Randall was brought on early, to see if he could extract as much spin as his counterpart and, with Richards chancing his arm, had him dropped twice, at deep cover and deep mid-on, before Warne stumped him off the impressive Gitay for a run-a-ball 61.
By now the score had already reached 112 in just the 23rd over. Josh Frey had proved expensive, but Cox had come on to bowl with good pace and movement to trouble both batters. At the other end, Zed was showing how to bowl at this level, bowling tightly and beating the bat with some fine deliveries, and got further reward when Warne took a fine low catch off a thick Aldarraji bottom edge, with just 6 more runs added.
However, it would take a collapse of Radlett proportions for the game to be lost and Warne decided to see what newcomer Harikaran could do. Getting zip from his tidy medium pace, Hari opened with a maiden then bowled the skipper with one that came back off the seam. 16 were now still needed, but there was little pressure on Codicote with 10 overs still remaining. Just a few more runs scored and no overs donated could have made all the difference.
Given the line-up, this was the most disappointing performance of the season. Gleaning just five points from the game, Radlett now find themselves third bottom and badly in need of a win.
