Radlett CC 3rd XI v Old Owens on Sat 26 Aug 2006 at 13:00
Radlett CC Won 6 wickets

Match report This was a vital contest, with both sides battling for one of the promotion places. Radlett had three newcomers in the side, Shamit Nathwani and Matt Soffair both immensely promising sixteen year olds who looked perfectly at home in the side, and Jon Tricker, who had been released from custody for the day to play cricket.

Smithers won the toss on a damp wicket and elected to take the field. This was a bold move, especiall in a "six-pointer" where it is important not only to get points, but to limit the other side's points. Deciding to bowl will only work if you win the game outright, which means bowling out the other side cheaply.

This is what the bowlers did, and effectively won the match for Radlett. Only three bowlers were used, led by Brian Dümmer, who bowled quite magnificently. Dümmer just seems to have improved with every game. Using the variable bounce and achieving lateral movement, his figures read 14-7-26-4. These are good stats, but hide the fact that he could have had eight wickets. Tricker at the other end got a lot of movement, much of which occurred inside his shirt, and picked up 4 for 33, showing just the talent we have missed for the last couple of seasons. Ollie Robertson came on and bowled beautifully to pick up two vital wickets cheaply.

Old Owens were bowled out for 78 in the 29th over. The bowling was backed by some really excellent catching. Robinson's was the first of eight catches, a brilliant reflex catch at gully. Teddy Edwards also got a couple, neither straightforward, but the first a wonderful stretching effort where it appeared that he had produced a shrimping net from his sleeve. Dominic Ingram and Jon Tricker pouched sharp chances, and Tim Smithers had an excellent day behind the stumps, taking two good catches, and looking at least as good as any wicket keeper we have had this season.

79 to win in 71 overs was achieved with six wickets and 50 overs to spare. Old Owen's top run scorer was also the best spin bowler any of us had faced for many years, and already has over 50 league wickets, so the chase was not straightforward. Debutant Matt Soffair opened the innings with Dom Ingram, and totally looked the part. He was undone by a delivery that flew off a length and would have removed most batsmen, the ball popping up to silly point for a simple catch. The wicket still had plenty of surprises after all the rain.

Nick Ingram joined his older brother at the crease, played well, hit three fours and looked in charge, when he was adjudged caught at slip in a flurry of dust, bat and smoke, where it seemed that his shoelaces had been tied together. A different umpire may well have given not out. Any other umpire would have given the unfortunate Shamit Nathwani not out, but the same umpire did give him caught via bat and pad. This was a discouraging start for a talented young batsman, but he will have plenty of other opportunities.

In the meantime Teddy Edwards had been caught and bowled, and Old Owens had spinners at both ends who were proving difficult to play. All the time Dom Ingram was batting serenely, never looking in the slightest trouble, and in the form of his life. He is averaging over 50 this season, and was still batting at the end when four byes brought Radlett a deserved victory, despite Mark Silva having been dropped in his short but eventful innings.

This was a very fine performance from Radlett, who now look favourites for promotion together with the 2nd and 5th XIs, and hopefully the 1st and 4th XIs too. The 3rd XI deserve promotion, having played some fine cricket in the last two months, will not struggle in the fourth division, and hopefully give our young aspiring players a decent level at which to test their cricketing skills.

Two matches to go. If we keep our nerve we will make it and get promoted. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that that's exactly what will happen.

Can't wait.
