Radlett CC 1st XI v Basingstoke & N Hants on Sat 06 Sep 2003 at
Radlett CC Won 4 wickets

Match report Radlett ended their most successful season in the Home Counties Premier League with a nail biting win against fellow mid table side Basingstoke.

Having won the toss Nick Fielden asked the visitors to bat first and he was instantly rewarded when pace man Stuart Browne blitzed through the opening defences of both Lee Nurse and Ian Maynard. However competent batting from Chandler (57) and Giles (68) saw ‘Stoke through to the lunch interval at 112 for 2.

Following the resumption Fielden turned to Kervin Marc in an attempt to break the partnership and the tall fast bowler didn’t disappoint with a fiery 6 overs spell that removed Chandler who could only fend a rising delivery to second slip where Oz Edwards made the catch. He also troubled incoming batsman Dean Nurse and both batsman were relieved when the heavens opened to take the players off for a 40 minute period.

With the number of overs in the game reduced ‘Stoke set off at a rapid rate in search of quick runs but with Marc and Graham Dill keeping the runs to a minimum and taking wickets at regular intervals the ‘Stoke innings fizzled to just 216 all out. Marc, the pick of the bowlers collected fine figures of 4 – 62 while Dill also collected 4 wickets.

With Charl Willoughby in the South African touring test team, Basingstoke have turned to Leeward Islands fast bowler Tonge to deliver the wickets for them. Tonge looked a class act and bowled throughout the Radlett innings, picking up 3 wickets in his 23 overs however he was badly let down by the back up bowling which leaked twice as many runs from the other end. This was in part due to yet another excellent innings from Nick Hampton who crashed his way to 82, to take his season’s league tally to 669 runs, he was ably assisted by Stephen Lowe who hit 48 in a stand which contributed 111 runs.

When both players departed in short succession Jon Freedman (22) & Dill (19) picked up the reigns and brought Radlett to within touching distance of victory however both perished in a desperate attempt for quick runs. As the games entered its final over the Cobden Hill side required 6 runs for victory and although Haydn Smith managed to scamper a couple of singles, intelligent bouncer bowling from Tonge meant that 4 runs were required from the last two balls. With Tonge bowling another short pitched delivery Smith swung hard and was delighted to see the ball squirm past Maynard on the square leg boundary for the match winning runs.

This week sees Radlett travel to the Oval in the prestigious Evening Standard Challenge Trophy final in what is the biggest match the club has played in its history. Their opponents on the ground where England levelled the test match series with South Africa on Monday will be Lordswood who will also be competing in their first Standard final.
