Match report
The achievements in this match are somewhat concealed by the apparent severity of the defeat. Probably one of the most amazing facts is that this team showed only two changes from the team selected on Tuesday and this was due largely to the ability of the higher teams to drag occasional players out of the woodwork to fill their gaps.
The team, a mix of six teenagers and the rest struggling (to varying degrees) to remember what it was like to be 40, fought hard in the field to defend a meagre total. Our 85 was only achieved as a result of a stylish, disciplined innings of 21 by Alexander Asher and a classic knock of 30 by U15 manager Ash Kamal.
For once, the 5ths has an opening seam attack, one which shows some promise for the future. There were a number of close calls but the luck didn't go their way. Containing Wormley to 3 an over was an achievement for John Mansell and Michael Williams, just a shame that they didn't have a new ball to bowl with and that they didn't both pick up a wicket for their efforts. Alexander Asher took the gloves and performed well.
First change Matt Soffair then bowled through to the end of the innings showing some excellent control of his leg-breaks and often having the vastly experienced Wormley openers in trouble.
After tea, and a short break from his excertions with the bat, Ash Kamal was a revelation with his left arm medium pacers bowled off a short run. Supported by good work in the field, Nick Robinson making some fine stops and covering wide areas, he immediately dropped into line and length and deserved far more than the two wickets for only 8 runs in as many overs shown in the scorebook.
Defeat, in this enjoyable and well-mannered encounter, finally arrived in the 27th over but not before the youngsters and Ash, who should be strongly persuaded to play more matches with his youngsters, had shown a fighting spirit which, no doubt, will lead them to victories later in the season.
