Cockfosters v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 16 May 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
With Nick Fielden playing for the 1st XI again, James Lewis captained the 2nd XI for the second week running. On a breezy afternoon with lots of clouds, and with rain showers forecast, he lost the toss, and Cockfosters CC 1st XI chose to field first. The pitch seemed quite dry, and its grass looked quite long and brown, as opposed to shaved or green.
Cockfosters' opening bowlers were quick and accurate, and soon had Radlett's early batsmen in difficulties, taking wickets regularly. Their first change bowler, slow left arm Sam Barker, continued the good work. Apart from James Lewis, who scored a steady 32 batting at No 5, all of RCC's batsmen from No 1 to No 8, failed quite badly, their top score being 6, and their joint total reaching only 24! Batting at No 9, Johnson Mafa scored 15 runs from 10 balls, but when Radlett's 9th wicket fell in over 23, the score had reached only 77.
Stuart Browne, Radlett's last man, then proceeded to score 47 runs from 56 balls in 53 minutes before he was well caught at deep mid-off. He hit seven fours, mostly lofted on- or off-drives. His innings also included a well timed cover drive as well as some less orthodox shots. In support, David Hegarty, Stuart's batting partner, scored 16 not out. Their last-wicket stand added 69 very valuable runs.
Two showers interrupted play during the innings, making the ball and the bowlers' runups slippery. All four Cockfosters bowlers coped well with these conditions. Sam Barker finished with the best analysis of 4 - 41. Cockfosters took eight catches in the course of the Radlett innings.
Taking account of the time lost due to the rain showers, and the early end of Radlett's innings, the umpires increased the permitted length of Cockfosters' innings from 47 to 53 overs. Johnson Mafa and John Barr opened the Radlett bowling, with Johnson taking the first wicket with the score on 18. John bowled five overs before being replaced by Stuart Browne. Cockfosters lost their second wicket to Johnson in over 13, at a total of 56, but their third wicket partnership continued to score steadily. David Hegarty bowled over No 20 to allow Johnson and Stuart to change ends. Unfortunately, Cockfosters' No 4, Chris Stead, played some big drives, scoring 22 from the over to reach 110 - 2.
The change of ends was very successful, Johnson taking three more wickets while Stuart bagged a couple. Cockfosters scored only 32 runs while losing these five wickets, but their eighth wicket pair added the remaining runs needed for a well deserved victory from 31.1 overs. During the innings, Radlett dropped some catches in the slip or w/k area. If these chances had stuck, it would have made Cockfosters task more difficult.
Cockfosters receive 30 points for their win, while Radlett collect 1 x 2 batting points for reaching (and exceeding) 140 runs, and seven bowling points.
