Baldock II v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 30 Jul 2016 at 1:00 pm

Match report This was the most pleasing performance of the season.

After an interesting selection meeting, plus subsequent changes, the 4s fielded what must be their youngest side ever, with five U15s, one U14 (Dylan Gunasekera, now something of a veteran in the team), plus U19 Amy. Indeed, at one point, the combined age of the four fielders in the offside ring still fell short of the fifth offside fielder, Dom Ingram, fielding at slip!

Another early finish therefore seemed likely, against third-in-the-table Baldock. However, Dom Ingram was again on form, hitting a fine 65, and for once runs were scored right down the order. Paticularly pleasing were the 20 runs eked out by young Chris Stevens at 9, making good use of the twelve overs that were remaing when he went into bat. Robust hitting by nr 8 Sandeep Singh added 27 runs. Even more usefully, Baldock conceded 53 extras, with the wicketkeeper insisting on standing up to everything and conceding 22 byes. Baldock reckoned that anything over 200 is a decent score on their sandy wicket, with an outfield that needed a mow. so 221-9 gave Radlett a great chance.

With Nav Sidhu and young William Stevens (6-3-6-1) bowling with impressive control, Baldock struggled to get any impetus. Indeed, just 25 were on the board in the 11th over when Stevens bowled the nr 1 with a fine slower ball. Ingram replaced Stevens and was equally tight, he and Sidhu then claiming further scalps to make it 47-3 in the 19th over. Amy Price made it 71-4, but nr 2 Walters, who had scored a ton in the match at Radlett, was still at the crease.

Batting with the nr 6, the pair proceeded to add 54, but at just four-an-over. The nr 6 should have been given out stumped, when he failed to slide his foot back quickly enough – perhaps a match-changing decision, as he stayed at the crease until the final over. Hope resurfaced when Warne took a sharp catch off Walters from a rising Singh delivery, but Baldock never really looked as though they were seriously chasing. If a couple of drops in the deep off Gunasekera had been taken, Radlett might well have secured a much-needed victory, but the whole performance had been heartening.
