Radlett CC 3rd XI v Botany Bay on Sat 06 Sep 2008 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 1 wicket

Match report On a normal weekend this pulsating low scoring game would not have been played but the last weekend of the season allowed this game to go ahead on the top square at Cobden Hill.

With the overnight rain soaked up by the sooper sopper, the game is ready to start 20 minutes late. Captain Iain Edwards wins the toss again and asked bottom of the table Botany Bay to bat.

I am advised that Bay are weak and Josh Rose bowls the first ball, which is smashed to the boundary and guess what the second ball is similarly despatched. A large total looks on but enter last week hero Roscoe "Chippy" Carpenter who produces a double wicket maiden and with the lst ball of his second over snare a third wicket to leave Bay 13 - 3. A good partnership between Kastelik and Rolt follows, during which every bowler is hit, with Neil Lederman being severley treated. Eddo then pulls another of his many rabbits out of the hat as Zeddly and Hardain (on debut)slow the scoring rate and start to frustrate the batsmen but it takes a wonder catch from Eddo to remove Kastelik at 105. Hardain and retiring keeper Warne combine next over as Colin smartly stumps Richardson to leave BB at 107-5. Kailash has by this time taken an unbelievable catch as a slog hits him under the arm pit and his reflex reaction leaves his hand extended as the ball lands in it!!

Zeddley is tight and mean and Hardain is bowling really beautifully. Eddo not being one to sit on his laurels has a hunch and Chip is recalled and bowls tidily and quickly and Hardain grabs wicket number 4 by bowling Rolt for a well composed 56. The innings subsides as Ross takes 3 wickets in 3 and a half overs to leave BB 142 all out.

After A sumptious Charley Charles tea the match resumes and Ingram and Warne in his last Radlett innings for a while stride to the wicket. Aged 174 between them they start smartly and Colin in particlar pays Testimonial cricket. It looks to be all over for Bay as Colin races to 39, having survived one scare when caught off a no ball.

Cricket is a funny game and they ay that one wicket brings two, well in our case it brought 7 as we subide from 53-0 to 83-7, with some injudicious shots played, Goulash stuck in stew as he went for a second. This is not to say that Botany Bay did not bowl well as their two youngsters Patrickson and Hall bowled with pace and fire and look very good prospects indeed. They take 5 of the Radlett wickets.

Having been rested Kasteik returns and bowls a fiery spell as Eddo and Tuney are sent back to the hutch. Enter the moment enter the man. Hardain is boyed by his bowling and with a few well chosen words from Tee Cee, he strides to the wicket and proceeds to bat fabulously, maturely and with skill. When Josh Rose was out at 98 the game looked dead and buried, but our other hero Ross joined H. Ross and Hardain bat sensibly picking up singles, knocking twos and hitting the bad balls into space for fours. The clock is ticking down and therus ar reducing, with a baying crowd getting enthalled. Hardain is eventually done by a fantastic delivery from Hall for a well crafted and as stated mature 32.

Bay smell victory but Leders stands firm and Chippy hits the firt ball of the last over for 4 and we celebrate a win, which to be fair our bowling deserved but our batting did not. I am not sure how Botany Bay finished bottom and they deserve credit for playing the match in a great spirit and not moaning about the slightly damp conditions. With their youngsters improving with age I expect to see them challenging for promotion next year.

A super game of cricket played by two competitve teams.

Thanks were given in the dressing room by Eddo to:

Geoff Bird for always being there.
Tony Cohen for scoring all season
Dominic Ingram for his pre match organisation
Colin Warne for his superb keeping and we wish him well playing Boules in the next 3 summers

However the main thanks must go to Eddo for his sometimes Brealeyesque captaincy and his general demeanour of encouraging everyone. I hope that Eddo remains as captain next year despite his threat to stand down.

A fine season for the 3's and lets build on this next year.
