Radlett CC 3rd XI v Southgate Adelaide on Sat 28 Jun 2008 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 67 runs
Match report
A blisteringly hot Hertfordshire day greeted Iain Edwards's army at Cobden Hill and the day was to end as a major triumph for Eddo. With Basil away, the scribe duties fall to Tee Cee.
Eddo won his customary toss and with the way this league works decides to bat thus allowing Radlett first use of a good looking track and the opportunity to gain maximum 10 batting points. Matt Bell promoted from the4th's opens with the returning Simon Randall and a slow and steady start is made with Radlett not getting to 2 an over until the 16th over by which time Matt has departed to an inswinger from Southgates Cohen. Warney and Randall get to 39 before Colin skies a return catch to the bowler. This would end up being their last success.
Gray joins Randall in an all Simon partnership that just went on and on and on. Starting slowly Randall had played himself in whilst Silla was less circumspect and played some sumptuous straight drives to get himself going.
Southgates bowling was tight and at drinks Radlett were 66 - 2. Not sure what was in the drinks but what followed was spectacular as the Simons' demolished whoever had the red projectile in their hand. Randall drove and played in the V, beautifully and having taken 102 balls to get to his 50 took only 42 more to get to his 100. Silla reached his 50 in 61 balls and ended up 92 not out after 101 balls. Simon Randall played one shot off the ground and this went for 6. Yep ONE SHOT OFF THE GROUND out of 165 balls faced. Simon ended up on 126 not out and Radlett had 236 for 2 from 53.
Tee Cee had been looking at the Southgate scorebook and noticed that the two openers scored quickly and also scored big runs but that following them runs seemed hard to come by on a regular basis. Skipper Eddo placed this nugget into the deep reaches of his cerebral fissure.
After a sumptuous tea, lovingly prepared by the Edwards family (again), the journey to the bottom ground resumed.
Following his tried and trusted method, Eddo asked Hasit to open with he old ball along with Roscoe at the Top Ground end. Carnage followed as Lyte and Chandler tried to win the game inside 25 overs. Hasit flighted the ball well but anything overpitched or slightly astray was despatched fast and hard to the boundary. Radlett had reached 100 in the 33rd over, but Southgate had theirs in the 16th over having seen off Hasit, Roscoe, Zeddly and Silla. Mind you Josh Rose's first over which got Southgate to 100 conceded 16 and he is lucky that Eddo is a kinder man than Tim as he allowed him a second over.
Zeddly returned at the railway track end and snared Chandler thanks to a sharp take from Colin. Eddo gathered his troops, remembered Tee Cee's snippet and started to turn the screw, with innovative field placings, giving Lyte a single and attacking the other end.
What followed was spectacular as Josh Rose got a rhythm going and was backed by some good fielding and some comedy fielding from Tuney who dived over the ball twice. Warney hindered by a bruised rib thanks to Zed, caught everything headed for his sore chest as Josh went mad and bowled with pace and guile and was well supported by Zed and Ross at the other end. From 113 for none in the 18th over, Southgate subsided to 169 all out with Josh snaring 8 for 43.
A fabulous win against a side that were 3rd in the league but the vagaries of the scoring system see them with 4 points against Radlett's 30.
Simon Randall thought he was due the plaudits for his 126 not out but word reached us of Gareth Bergs astonishing 159 not out for the 1's.
Eddo must be congratulated for getting his team to play so well, and for all players including those who did not bat or bowl who gave their all in the field. We think Toby did not touch the ball all day other than when playing single wicket cricket behind the scorers!!!
Man of the match is awarded by Eddo on a joint basis to Simon Randall and Josh Rose
TFC award goes to Nick Tune and Toby Sutherland as according to Eddo "at least I had to toss up and call in the result!!!!"
A great win and a great platform over the last 2 weeks to now climb forward.
