Match report
This was a crunch game, away at Berko on a fine Friday evening. The U14’s needed to get another win to give them a real chance of making the QF but more importantly, they needed a win to draw me level with Raj for the season.
James won the toss and decided to bat. Max and Louis opened the batting and set a cracking pace, although we were helped by a massive number of wides that Berko donated to the cause. Louis picked up where he left off on Wednesday, and punished anything short or wide, he played some really excellent shots and never looked in trouble. Max played his part and by the time he was out they had added 58 for the opening stand, in about 9 overs.
James is also in good nick and he was soon putting the bowling to the sword. Louis was first to his 50, cracking another 4 to take him to 53no, in all he hit nine 4’s and played very well.
Maaz came in to support James, who was dealing mainly in boundaries, in all he hit nine 4’s and a huge 6, that scattered the sheep in the next field, in his 50no.
Dillan was unlucky to get about the only really good ball of the innings and Ed and Maaz scrambled the last couple of runs to take Radlett to their highest score of the season, 150-2, off the 20 overs.
It was never really likely that Berko were going to make the runs, and I felt that some of the normal intensity was missing from the bowling/fielding. The lads were too busy trying to run people out, etc, to realise that just keeping it tight would bring rewards.
We also gave away far too many wides, I think the fact the wicket was on slope didn’t help the bowlers find their rhythm. Maaz bowler well and picked up one of the openers clean bowled, George was slightly more expensive, but was unlucky that a catch was put down off his last ball.
Tom Hicks picked up a wicket, a nice catch behind the stumps from Ed and Usman gave the ball some air, and once he found his line kept he batsman quiet.
Marcus bowled quickly, and picked up 2 wickets, the other opener caught and bowled and one of the lower order players caught by James at mid-on.
Max bowled the last couple of overs and also picked up a caught and bowled.
Dillan held on to a good catch to give James his wicket and the last batsman was run out in the last over.
Berko did make 123, including 18 extras.
The result was never in doubt following our innings, but we will have to bowl better if we want to progress deep into the competition.
