Harrow Town v Radlett CC Women's XI on Sun 22 Jun 2014 at 2:00 pm
Radlett CC Won by 32 runs

Match report Radlett maintained their unbeaten start to the season, and indeed increased their winning run to 26 consecutive matches, with a hard fought away victory over Harrow Town in the North London League Division A.

Winning the toss and electing to bat openers Anna Harris and Chloe Frame made a watchful start which saw them reach the first drinks break on 10 overs at 40 without loss. Harris fell LBW, soon after which brought Laura Sandy to the crease. After a tentative start Sandy began to find her range and was soon dispatching the Harrow Town bowlers to all corners. Frame played a solid supporting role, but found scoring more difficult and eventually fell 5 overs from the end of the innings for 28. Sandy, in the meantime, brought up her first competitive half century and would finish unbeaten on 71 as Radlett reached a total of 155 for 2 from their 30 overs.

Having bowled Harrow out for just 66 less than a month earlier Radlett felt confident they could contain the opposition. However, on a small pitch with a lightning fast outfield the Harrow openers began to adjust to the pace attack and were soon up on the required run rate despite the loss of one of their openers (clean bowled by Sandy). With 10 overs remaining Harrow were on 100 for 1 with their #3 bat having just passed the half century mark and looking well set.

It was clear that stand-in skippers Samantha Battman and Katie Pankhurst needed to find a way to take pace off the ball, but with only one recognised spin bowler (Harris) in the side they were struggling to contain the run rate. Enter Chloe Jackson to bowl her first overs in a Radlett shirt. Her orthodox right arm "off-spin" proved exactly what was needed as Harrow were suddenly having to force the pace of the game. Their #3 soon skied a dolly back to Jackson, while Hannah Smith (who had found a good line and length at the other end) subsequently trapped the other opener plumb in front. The Jackson-Smith combination continued to strangle the opposition for runs, and wickets kept coming for Jackson (she would finish with figures of 4-14).

So, what promised to be a very tight finish eventually fizzled out into, what would look on paper, a fairly routine 32 run victory. In reality it was anything but. Huge credit for the win goes to Laura Sandy for her explosive maiden club half century and Chloe Jackson for an inspired spell of bowling at the death.
