Radlett CC 5th XI v Leverstock Green 111 on Sat 02 Jun 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 1 wicket

Match report Already into week 5 of the season and the 4th match played was set to be a real clash. Returning to the cauldron of cricket which is Queens school. Radlett played a 4th keeper this match. A strong squad is set in place and now they are well poised to take a first win this season.

Radlett lost the toss and were asked to bat on a fairly uneven track and drying conditions.

Mark Turpin and Lloyd opened proceedings well with the bowlers finding good rhythm early on they contained. Mark eager to boost the score called a 3rd run and the calamity that struck was Lloyd run out early on. Next Tony Peck arrived and departed score read 20 for 2. Mark played the shots but unfortunately after a settling period was over got a slow swing ball to bowl him. At 20 for 3 after 9 overs all was not well. Oliver Jackson was joined by Andrew Saunders both occupied the crease for 5 overs then fell Andrew after finding form was caught out for 13. In came Simon with all to play for plus pride he also followed by playing shots and not coming to bay with the bowling and was bowled. Again 56 for 4 and another rebuild was required which hadn’t happened so far in matches. Neel Malde with Keerthi was a combination of talented youth and matured experience. Neel has immense batting potential and will become even more powerful and dominating in strokeplay as time goes on. He managed to get the quick singles play the bad balls to the boundary and also controlling his balance and timing for all ground strokes. Keerthi also played his full array of strokes and he finishes playing through the ball with quick arms a joy to watch when he despatches 4 balls. Neel hit 8 4’s and thoroughly deserved more than 44 not out as the lower order only contributed 10 runs. The partnership was key to the innings and it was worth 47. Brendan hit his first 4 which was great and Radlett closed on 131 for 10 in 45 overs. A lot of cricket was left and really the pitch offered so much to the bowlers early on that it could not be a one sided game on any scale.

Leverstock Green were pleased when taking the field to bat as it was not a good enough total. The run rate was only 3 so a 4 ball was enough to get the target in 45 overs left. Opening up with Vikram and Lloyd the pair was a winning formula. Vikram 1st over got a few lose balls out of the way and with encouragement from keeper (Andrew) found his line 4th ball to take the off stump and bail. This was a crucial start Radlett were looking for and unexpected by their openers. Lloyd also bowled tightly and got a maiden 1st over. Vikram reeled off 4 opening overs for no runs probably a 1st in 5th games.

The batting crept up to nearly 2 runs an over. Lloyd took a rest after 5 overs which was quick, seaming and a probing spell by the youngster. The pitch did not offer the quick bowler the pace so really suggested swing bowling and spin as the order of the day. In came the prodigious Keerthi who is a real trier and tests batsman to the limit with their line. He got a wicket 2nd over cleanly bowling middle stump yorker for his wicket. Vikram got another break through with a batsman playing on after getting tied down the previous over. The game was truly in the balance. Keerthi was uneasy after 5 overs and rested. Enter spin merchant Neel with off spin variety. Leverstock’s left hander was making way for a big innings especially after being dropped off Vikram at mid on. Neel quickly found all the variety balls and spin on a fairly turning wicket. By which time Mark Turpin a bowling debutant to the team arrived with the seam variety. He did very well to get 2 wickets one caught at silly mid off by Vikram very much a catching practise dismissal and the first wicket was clean bowled to the delight of everyone. Neel had the left hander cleanly bowled along with the other batsman to get himself 2 well deserved wickets. By this time the field was attacking and ready to take all catching opportunities. The danger man had been dismissed and the tail was wagging. The asking rate was not even 4 so still an easy enough game to win for Leverstock. Lloyd bowled his 2nd spell and maybe did not get the variety he wanted to question batsman. But he got a wicket with Vikram taking his 2nd catch at the same silly mid off position this time struck very hard. Now 8 wickets were down Radlett were sniffing victory. Neel produced another wonderful delivery to bamboozle the batter for his 3rd wicket. Only 1 wicket left and a handful of overs to get less than 15 runs was all too much. There was 1 chance where the no. 11 hit an edge which was missed by the watchful keeper who just missed it - one lapse of orientation all day and the chance was stolen out of the jaws of victory. That was it the last batter hit a boundary in the 40th over to seal victory by 1 wicket. A tense finish but not the expected result for Radlett. The fielding was attacking and pressure was evident but the truth was we had not put up enough runs on the board. 150 would have been a much more realistic target to defend.

Man of the Match: Neel Malde for 44 not out and 3 for 29 off 11 overs and 1 maiden he played excellently within himself and performed with a sense of real achievement for the team.

Radlett are placed 19 out of 20 and they have moved 1 place up from last week so things are now a peg up from rock bottom but a mountain to climb all the more.
