Radlett CC 4th XI v St. Albans III on Sat 07 Sep 2013 at 12:30 pm
Radlett CC Won by 84 runs

Match report Radlett knew that a win would guarantee survival in Division 7, but the award of the extra 11 points claimed from the match at Waltham Cross Rosedale made it it possible for a decent haul of bonus points to be enough (as it turned out, 15 points would have sufficed if Radlett had drawn, or 17 if defeated).

Winning the toss against his wishes, and to keep the bonis points option open, skipper Warne reluctantly decided to bat, confident the deep batting line-up could deliver maximum batting points and put the side in a strong position to force a victory. After all, St Albans, sitting 12 points below them, would have to chase the win.

But with the team back in the hutch after 49.5 overs, with just 154 on the board and only 2 points secured, things were looking grim.

Openers Bell and Cox had started well enough, scoring 38 off the first 11 overs, but then played out five maidens. Just seven more had been added when Cox was bowled, three overs later, for 24 and just a further four when Bell met the same fate with the same score.

With two new batsmen at the crease, things moved on slowly, but at least a foundation was being built. Then disaster. Key batsman Noah Lipschitz was undone by the first over of spin , bowled for 18, and Gitesh Patel was then carelessly stumped next ball. 76-4 after 29 overs – things were not looking good.

However, Jamie Wells was looking in prime form, stroking 4s with abandon. With Bhavin Kakkad more sedate, but secure, at the other end, 49 were added in 10 overs before Wells fell to a fine tumbling catch at wide mid-on for 32. 132-5 then quickly became 141-8: Warne declined a suicidal single for Kakkad to be run-out for 27, slipping as he tried to turn; Softy, following orders to try and score quick runs, mis-hit to mid-wicket; and Warne, having decided to bat out as many of the overs as possible, missed a cut shot and was bowled.

Shamit Nathwani and Harry Will added a further 8 before Will was brilliantly caught, hitting down the ground, and just 1 more was added when Nathwani was bowled.

The St Albans' spinner had taken 6-33 off 11 overs, on what was a very dry, turning wicket. Warne therefore decided to keep the old ball and open with Nathwani and Softy. Both bowled tighty and just 10 had been scored when Nathwani had the nr.1 caught superbly by Will, low-down at mid-off.

With Softy looking the less dangerous of the spin-twins, Warne brought on Will down-wind and changed Nathwani’s end, the latter striking immediately to win a plumb lbw. Then, four overs, later Nathwani bowled the nr 3, the score having crawled to just 32-3 off 16 overs.

Much would now depend on the St Albans nr 4, who had played 11 games for the 1s and 2s. Harry Will had started nicely, conceding just a single off his first two overs, then bowling a maiden after taking the new ball. And it was he who took the key wicket, clean bowling the dangerous nr.4 with a fine delivery.

St Albans' 5th wicket pair began to repair the damage, but were taking risks, peppering Jamie Wells at short mid-off. But, with the score on 54, Wells was to get his man, to give Nathwani his fourth victim.

From this point on, the St Albans’ innings declined rapidly. Cox had replaced Will and, in his second over, induced a nick to keeper Warne. Nathwani then secured another lbw. The 8th wicket pair then added 15 in 5 overs, before Wells took another catch, this time off Cox, immediately after moving to a deeper cover position.

Next over it was all over. Nathwani again brought Wells into action and, two balls later, gave the opposition spinner a dose of his own medicine, with another plumb lbw. Cue great joy and relief. Radlett have spent the vast majority of the season in the relegation zone, hampered by poor availability, but deserve great credit for avoiding the drop.
