Luton Town & Indians III v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 20 Jul 2013 at 1:00 pm
Radlett CC Lost by 1 wicket

Match report Awful ground. Awful pitch. Exciting match, with Radlett taking 5 wickets with the score on 58 and getting the oppo 93-9, but unable to break the last wicket partnership. And, to cap it all, the scorebook shows the oppo were still 4 short of victory.

Skipper Warne won the toss and, with a light-weight batting line-up, decided that first use of the dry, Council-maintained pitch was the sensible option. And things were going swimmingly as both Ben Thornhill and young Alex Cook batted nicely on the tricky surface. The 13th over proved unlucky, however, Cook edging to the keeper, with the score on 47, and the collapse commenced.

Warne found it difficult to pick up the ball against a dark background (the sight-screen comprising a metal fence covered in dark ivy) and duly lost his off stump to a ball that (he thinks) kept low. Gitesh Patel then edged one onto his pads to be given lbw, whilst "I should be batting in the top 6" Meeps Snr showed why he normally doesn't, swinging at a few then being bowled for 5. Top-scorer Thornhill soon followed, leaving the side on 67-5.

The procession continued, Kushal Malde out caught for 14, Ramitha Meeps caught driving for 11 and Luke Paice adjudged lbw after striking a couple of nice 4s. Jamie Wells had arrived late, after agreeing to make up the 11 at short notice, and struck a fine straight six in a belligerent innings of 16, before lofting one to cover. Young debutant George Lawrence (another late call-up) looked sound, but was left stranded when fellow debutant Jay Purohit was bowled for 0.

With only 39 overs having been bowled, there was time for 10 overs before tea. Warne took the old ball and opened with Meeps Snr and Cook. The Luton nr 1 smashed Meeps’ second and third balls for 4, but was well caught by Warne, slashing at a widish delivery. Nrs 2 and 3 continued in a similar vein, as if they knew it was only a matter of time before their number was up on a deteriorating pitch, and the score raced into the 40s.

Warne took the new ball and brought on Paice, with Meeps changing ends. The latter struck immediately, a lofted shot from the nr 3 finally falling in the right place, with Malde taking a comfortable catch at deepish mid-on.

58-2 then suddenly became 58-6. In his next over, Meeps secured an lbw, then next ball had the nr 5 sensationally caught at gully, Meeps Jnr parrying a fierce cut then catching the rebound at full stretch. Well caught, son!

At the other end, although struggling with his line and giving Warne plenty to do down the leg-side, Paice was bowling fast and unleashing the odd unplayable delivery that moved off the wicket and, in his fourth over, bowled the nr 2 for 25. Next over, Meeps cleaned up the nr 6, with Paice immediately taking out the nr 7’s leg stump, to put Radlett in a commanding position at 62-7.

Paice was only allowed a further 2 overs, but the returning Cook maintained the pressure with three consecutive maidens and looked threatening. Despite several lbw appeals, the partnership survived, adding 20 runs before Meeps finally got the umpire to raise his finger again. And when he induced a simple, lofted catch to Warne in his next over, making it 93-9, Radlett looked set for a famous victory. Alas, as Messrs Cook and Clarke know too well, removing the last wicket pair can be a problem and Luton had their skipper at the crease with a proper batter, who had come in low due to stomach problems. The pads were struck several times, but the best chance went begging as an edge from Meeps flew past first slip’s left hand at a good height. A few more lusty blows and it was all over.
