Radlett CC 2nd XI v Stevenage II on Sat 01 Jul 2006 at 13:30
Match was Drawn

Match report Shoddy outfielding ultimately cost Radlett this match. At least 20 runs were conceded by poor ground fielding, whilst two simple catches and five more difficult ones were grounded.

Despite this, Radlett had done well to restrict Stevenage to 255, after the openers had put on 78 at a run-a-ball. Josh Rose’s bouncy deliveries were punished particularly severely and it was only the introduction of spinner David Hegarty to partner the steady Heath Paynter that brought some normality back to proceedings.

Opener Ali had failed to “walk” when bottom-edging one to the keeper, then offered the easiest of chances to mid-off, which was dropped. Next ball, Paynter downed a difficult one-handed caught-and-bowled chance to set the pattern for the day. The breakthrough came when Simon Gray took a smart catch at square leg off Paynter to dismiss the aggressive Ali. Hegarty then snared two quick victims to leave Stevenage looking rocky on 80-3.

The fast start allowed Stevenage the luxury of consolidating against some tight Radlett bowling, but the introduction of Robbie Crocker’s off-spin saw the fourth-wicket partnership gather momentum, adding 108 before Hegarty took a smart catch at fine-leg off Chaudry. A further two quick wickets left Stevenage on 200-6, but some effective hitting by the lower order took the total on to 255 for the loss of 7 wickets. Hegarty finished with fine figures of 4-71 off 21 overs and Chaudry 2-48 off 13.

Radlett still fancied their chances, but got off to a slow start, scoring just 36 off 14 overs, with Stevenage adopting a surprisingly defensive field. Radlett lost their first wicket in the 7th over with the score on 19, when Nick Hampton fell lbw for 5, and were in further trouble four runs later when Muhammad Akoojee hit a catch to point to record his first failure of the season.

A fine partnership of 130 between David Robinson and Simon Gray then ensued. After taking a few overs to size up the bowling, the pair set about upping the scoring rate in fine style until Robinson was smartly stumped for 82. However, Radlett now only needed 104 off 15 overs with plenty of batting to come and Simon Gray going well. Gray moved smoothly past 50 and in partnership with Jim Chaudry took the score to 183 before being run out for 62 contemplating a second run. The required scoring rate had now risen to seven an over and Chaudry perished next over on 18, skiing a catch to the bowler. Colin Warne was promoted to try and hit a few quick runs, but failed to connect with a few attempted hits before being given out lbw off a loud inside edge. 63 were now required off the 6 remaining overs, at which point skipper Amjad Khan decided to deny a defensive Stevenage team the chance of victory. Radlett finished on 211-6, regretting the runs that had been given away by poor fielding and periods of loose bowling.
