Codicote v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 23 Jun 2012 at 13:00
Radlett CC Won by 5 wickets

Match report Catches win matches – but we will never know if the outcome of this match would have been different if Codicote had taken an easy chance offered by Tim Smithers early in his innings and either of two similarly offered by Zed. Coming together with the team in some difficulty at 32-3 in the 21st over, the pair added 82 to take Radlett to the verge of victory.

Zed had been promoted to inject much needed vim into the scoring rate. The opening pair of Dom and Rob Millard had managed just 23 off 13 overs, before the latter edged to the keeper. Perhaps feeling the need to get on with it, Phil Cooper just failed to clear the tall player at mid-on two overs later. Dominic struggled on, but finally succumbed for 20, bowled by one keeping a bit low.

Riding their early luck, Zed and Tim took full toll of the tiring opening bowling and the less demanding change bowling. There were never going to be too many quick singles in this partnership, the pair saving their energy for hitting 16 fours and a six between them. Smithers was adjudged lbw on 32, but there were no wobbles as Zed confidently saw the team home.

Radlett were probably disappointed to have to chase so many. Codicote had ground along at a snail’s pace and had only made 66 when the third wicket fell in the 35th over, which was in effect 66-4 , as the nr3 had retired hurt taking a quick single. Waquas Pervez had conceded only 16 runs off his opening spell of 11 overs, though his habit of bowling two big swinging deliveries down legside each over added a few to the byes total, despite Colin Warne’s heroic efforts. At the other end, Meeps Snr had replaced the frugal Zed and settled into a long, accurate spell (17-9-30-3), well supported in due course by Ajay, who was getting appreciable turn. But the opening bat/bowler/skipper had now been dislodged after taking 104 balls for his tedious 15 and the lower order, aided by some geriatric catching attempts, added precious runs.

So, a fourth win on the trot and a major test of the club’s bowling resources in particular – 17 bowlers have already turned their arms over for the 4s in just 6 games! But they have all performed as needed, the secret on this season's slow damp pitches being to keep things tight and leave a small total to chase. Simples!
