Match report
After the recent heavy rains washed out their last two Home Counties Premier League Division 2 East fixtures, Radlett resumed their campaign at the picturesque Ditchmore Lane ground of Stevenage. Under bright sunshine and faced with a rather motley looking pitch, Stevenage won the toss and elected to bat, but were soon in all sorts of trouble as South African paceman Shane Burger ran through the brittle top order. Eshewing outright pace in favour of more traditionally english virtues of accuracy and a full length, Burger used the new ball superbly finding late swing and some seam movement into the bargain, a combination none of the hosts top order could cope with as wickets tumbled, the first 8 falling inside 20 overs with 57 on the board. A mini recovery was staged but Stuart Browne nipped in for the 9th wicket just after lunch and Burger promptly wrapped things up in
the next over to finish with fine analysis of 8-43 off 18 overs, Stevenage dismissed for just 85.
In reply, Radlett lost Nick Hampton early, but were cruising along nicely through Nick Fielden and Mitz Choksi, but the introduction of left arm spinners Kazmi and Azhar caused widespread carnage as 24-1 became 41-7 in no time, the spinners finding some sharp turn and exploiting some inconsistent bounce. With the game on a knife edge, Radlett were fortunate to find cool heads amidst the mayhem in the shape of Graham Dill and skipper Daniel Chippeck, who in combination managed to neutralise the spinners with some skillfully executed attacking shots mixed with studious defence. Stevenage took the new ball with 20 still needed, but Dill had all the answers and unleashed some fine drives to finish on 26 not out and steer Radlett home to a very hard fought 3 wicket victory.
Skipper Chippeck was a relieved man afterwards : "At 41-7 we were well and truly up against it, and I must salute Graham for a superb innings under pressure, he was the only batsman on either side to really master the difficult conditions, and he did magnificently to get us home. Naturally I am delighted to have taken 25 points from what is a very diifcult away trip, and to see Shane back in full flow with the ball and bagging 8 wickets was a huge lift for the team."
Next up for Radlett in their Home Counties Premier League Division 2 East campaign is North Mymms, who visit the Brunton Memorial Ground at Cobden Hill this Saturday.
