Match report
The sky for this match was cloudless, the sun hot, the outfield dry and fast. CCC won the toss, and decided to bat first.
Stuart Browne and John Barr opened the bowling for RCC, CCC reached 48 – 0 after 10 overs, and Haydn Smith replaced John at the start of over 12. Stuart took a rest after bowling 8 overs for 33 runs, with Lee Fortis as his replacement. With Haydn bowling economically, CCC's score increased to 82 – 0 after 20 overs. They reached 100 – 0 in 90 minutes during over 25, but, in the next over, Haydn bowled their No. 1 batsman in the course of a wicket maiden. The score became 105 – 1 and Simon Jackson took over the other end from Lee. After 30 overs, the score had increased to 117 – 1, not quite four runs per over.
Fraser Crawford began to bowl at over 34. This allowed Haydn to switch ends, replacing Simon for the start of over 35. This move paid off in overs 37 and 39 as Haydn bowled CCC's other opener, and then caught and bowled their No 3, leaving the score on a still healthy 168 – 3. Stuart Browne returned to bowl over 40 from the opposite end to his first spell, and was rewarded with a successful LBW appeal against CCC's No. 5 from his second ball. The score at the end of this over was 174 – 4.
Haydn and Stuart continued to bowl for the rest of the CCC innings. A slip catch by Simon Jackson off Haydn's bowling dismissed CCC's No. 6 at 190 – 5 in over 43. CCC reached the 200 mark in over 47, after 164 minutes. Some quick fielding and an over-the-stumps throw by Gwilym Jones at deep mid-wicket broke a useful partnership by running out CCC's No. 7 at 236 - 6 in over 52. Haydn excelled himself in over 53 by bowling nervelessly to conserve runs, achieving this partly by performing a hat-trick with LBW, Bowled and LBW from the final three balls of the innings. The final CCC score of 244 – 9 set RCC a target of 245 to win from a maximum of 47 overs, requiring a scoring rate of slightly more than 5.2 runs per over.
Extras for the innings were W 1, NB 1, B 8, LB 2. At tea, RCC had 9 bonus bowling points and CCC had the maximum 10 batting bonus points.
Gwilym Jones and Nick Fielden opened RCC's innings, Gwilym departing in over 7, at 24 – 1, and Nick following in over 8 at 32 – 2. David Robinson and Fraser Crawford reached 52 – 2 after 10 overs, but David was caught by the CCC wicketkeeper in over 13 at 66 – 3. Duncan Watson, CCC's slow bowler, began bowling at over 15, and continued through the rest of the RCC innings. John Barr, RCC's No. 5, and Fraser pushed the score to 101 – 3 in 74 minutes from 18 overs before Fraser fell LBW in Watson's next over. During over 23, John Barr was caught at long off in a Watson wicket maiden, reducing the score to 122 - 5.
Haydn Smith and Lee Fortis then began to rebuild the innings, reaching 197 before Haydn was caught at long off from the first ball of over 41. He had scored 71 from 76 balls in 74 minutes, reaching his 50 in 53 minutes from 48 balls. Following on from his 21 economical overs, this was a remarkable feat of skill and stamina. Lee and Simon Jackson, his new partner, took up the hunt for the remaining 48 runs from 47 balls. Unfortunately, Simon was bowled by Watson in over 45 at 226 – 7, with 19 runs needed from 16 balls. To add to the tension, the over finished as a wicket maiden, and 19 runs were needed from 12 balls.
Lee and Josh Charles added six runs from over 52, but Josh played a lofted off-drive at the second ball of Watson's final over, and CCC's Michael Dunning took his third good catch at long off. 232 – 8, 11 needed from four balls. The batsmen having crossed while the ball was still in the air, Brandon Lewis, RCC's No. 10, took up position at the non-striker's end. Lee hit a welcome boundary from ball three. He hit the next ball to deep mid-wicket, and ran one run comfortably. His call for a second run was a calculated risk which would have kept RCC's chances of winning alive. However, a good return throw arrived at the stumps with Lee still two or three yards out of his ground. His 46 runs, including one six, were scored from only 64 balls. With Lee's departure, RCC's collective back was against the wall at 237 – 9, with eight runs needed from two balls for a win, and only one wicket standing. With all results still possible, Stuart Browne pushed the first ball calmly for a single. The CCC fielders all gathered round Brandon, who played the final ball of the day defensively to draw the match.
The only extras during RCC's innings were two byes and one leg bye. RCC obtained 10 batting bonus points to add to their 9 bowling bonus points, and CCC got 9 bowling bonus points, taking their total for the day to 19. Both sides had chances to win the game, but a draw seemed the fairer result. When a 100 over match reaches the last over with all results still possible, and the outcome depends on the fate of the final ball, a draw is anything but boring.
