St. Margaretsbury v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 15 May 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by 121 runs

Match report The weather for this match was dry, with small clouds providing intermittent shade. StMCC’s ground is spacious, with a very slight slope in the square from one wicket to the other. Nick Fielden won the toss for RCC, and decided to bat.

Gwilym Jones and Nick began the innings against some brisk new ball bowling from StMCC’s opening bowlers. Nick scored seven from the second over, but at 9 – 0 in the fourth over, Gwilym was caught from a thin edge to the wicketkeeper. David Robinson and Nick replied with a watchful defence, reaching 23 – 1 after 10 overs. The scoring rate increased as the early innings proceeded. One highlight occurred in over 14 as David added 15 of the 16 scored during that over, helping the total to reach 70 – 1 after 20 overs. By this time, StMCC’s opening bowlers had been replaced. David (32) was LBW in over 21 with no increase in the total.

RCC’s No. 4, Fraser Crawford, played himself in for his first three overs or so, but then began to score quickly, driving the field deeper with fours and sixes. Some gently placed strokes to unoccupied parts of the field then gave him some easy singles. In the meantime, Nick Fielden achieved a good 50 in 102 minutes from 69 balls during over 27, and the score reached 116 – 2 by the end of over 30. The partnership continued to prosper, despite two or three changes of mind and direction over calls for runs. Milestones along the way were the 100 run partnership in over 39 after 56 minutes, Fraser’s 50 in 57 minutes from 60 balls in the same over, a score of 178 – 2 at the end of over 40, and Nick’s century in 153 minutes from 118 balls in over 44. Unfortunately, Fraser’s entertaining innings of 82 was ended by a catch by StMCC’s wicketkeeper in the next over with the score on 219 - 3.

RCC’s No. 5, John Barr, also took a look at the bowling for a few balls before hitting out. Discounting the three wide deliveries which he faced, John scored 32 runs from 19 legitimate balls, including three big sixes and one four. In the same time, Nick added 26 more runs to take his own score to 127 not out from 139 balls, and the team’s total to 283 - 3, before he declared the innings closed after 51 overs, two overs early.

This excellent display by practically all of the RCC’s players who got a chance to perform, was a great pleasure to watch. StMCC’s fielding was keen, and their bowlers stuck to their uphill task well. It was rather surprising to note that their opening bowlers did not return for a second spell late in the innings, particularly Martin Brown, who had conceded only 16 runs from his 9 overs. Extras during the innings were W 5, NB 0, B 1, LB 4. RCC obtained 10 batting bonus points and StMCC 3 bowling bonus points.

RCC’s opening bowlers were Stuart Browne and John Barr. After two successive maiden overs, StMCC’s No. 2, Simon Tilbury, began to assert himself, hitting fours and sixes freely, reaching 32 out of 41 – 0 by the end of over 8. In Stuart’s next over, Lee Fortis took a sharp catch at short leg to dismiss Giles Tilbury, Simon’s brother, for a score of 41 – 1 and a wicket maiden to Stuart. StMCC reached 56 – 1 after 10 overs, close to the overall scoring rate which they would need for a victory. However, Haydn Smith replaced John Barr, and began to bowl very economically. Stuart Browne then dismissed Simon Tilbury LBW with the first ball of over 13 and StMCC’s No 4 LBW with the next ball. 62 – 3, with Stuart on a possible hat-trick! Sam Spencer, a talented young batsman, defended the hat-trick ball successfully, and the moment passed. But StMCC’s momentum had gone, and their scoring rate fell away.

At 91 – 3 from 20 overs, Nick Fielden began to introduce more changes to the RCC attack. Simon Jackson had Sam Spencer LBW in over 23 with the score at 103 – 4, StMCC reached 123 – 4 from 30 overs and Haydn Smith caught StMCC’s No. 3 off Lee Fortis’ bowling in over 31 with no addition to the score, but a second wicket maiden, this time to Lee. Brandon Lewis’ five overs were rapid and tidy, but produced no wickets. Haydn began his second spell of bowling at the end of over 35, when the total had reached 129 – 5. His second over, in which he bowled StMCC’s No. 7 for a score of 144 - 6, was the third wicket maiden of the innings. Stuart Browne then joined Haydn in the attack, and took two more wickets with the fifth and sixth balls of his first over from a second good catch at short leg by Lee and another LBW decision. 149 – 8, with Stuart on a possible hat-trick again. In Haydn’s intervening over, Brandon Lewis dived to take a very good one-handed catch, dismissing StMCC’s No.10 with the score on 150 – 9 after 40 overs. StMCC’s wicketkeeper Joe Anthony kept out Stuart’s second hat-trick attempt and helped to add eight more runs from the next four balls before falling to a smart stumping by Josh Charles, standing up.

RCC had won by 121 runs with 8 overs in hand, a very large margin indeed. This promises well for the rest of the coming season. Extras were W 1, NB 2, B 5, LB 6. RCC gained 30 league points for their win, and StMCC’s innings contributed one batting bonus point to add to their three bowling bonus points.
