Leverstock Green v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 18 Jun 2005 at
Radlett CC Won 4 wickets
Match report
Radlett took a very young but talented side away to Leverstock Green on a glorious Saturday afternoon. Olly Robertson, the newly appointed 2nd XI skipper, won the toss and invited the opposition to bat. With the sun belting down, Radlett's opening pair of Brian Dummer and Robertson bowled a good line, with Robertson making an early breakthrough helped by a great catch from Colin Warne behind the stumps.
As the hot sun took its inevitable toll on bowlers and fieldsmen, the Leverstock Green batsmen began to take control. Radlett then turned to the spin pair of Robert Crocker and James Lewis. With the pitching starting to turn, Radlett were able to put some pressure back on to the batting side, Robert Crocker taking three wickets, but the score still crept up to 212-6. There was then a final flurry of big hitting and Leverstock had the luxury of being able to declare on 264-6 after just 43 of a possible 53 overs. This gave the hosts 57 overs to dismiss a Radlett team that had batted second in every match this season never reaching 200 runs.
Radlett started brightly, keeping up with the run rate, but at the expense of four of the top five batsmen. However, Radlett's fifth wicket pair of Lewis and Robertson took control in a match winning partnership which saw Lewis hit a record 154 off just 150 balls, well supported by Robertson with 54. It was a brilliant innings from Lewis who struck the ball to all parts of the ground, a task made easier by the intelligent supporting role played by his captain.
The team had worked hard for their captain in the sweltering heat and could have faced an even more daunting total. All credit to Leverstock Green for going for the win which would probably been achieved but for one man, James Lewis.
