Radlett CC - 4th XI Team Page

Captain's Profile - Colin Warne

Colin Warne has been a stalwart for the club for over 10 years, racking up nearly 2000 runs, 148 catches and 43 stumpings whilst keeping wicket for every team from the 1st XI through to the 5th XI.

These numbers place Warne 1st overall in both catches and stumpings since Radlett's electronic records began in 2000. He's also 31st in the run scoring list, with a best of 104 not out in 2002. An impressive feat!

For the last two seasons he has settled in the 4th XI and now finds himself captaining the side as they look to rise from the Saracens Herts League Divison 7. Here Colin reflects on his cricketing experiences to date and looks ahead to the season to come.

What's your full name? Colin Neil Warne
Where were you born? Manchester
How old where you when you started playing cricket? Around 3, in the back garden. First school match at 10.
Do you have any on-field/off-field nicknames? Warney - very original!  Many years ago,"Scoop", due to my reporting for West Herts Hockey Club.
What do you do for a living away from the cricket pitch? Taking early retirement from EDF Energy, where I was Marketing Director responsible for large business customers.
How long have you been playing for Radlett Cricket Club? Since 2002.
What teams/clubs have you played for previously? Played for Kings Heath in Birmingham when I left university. Joined Bricket Wood when we moved South, but retired when we had children, as I continued playing hockey and being absent every Saturday all year round would not be popular!  Restarted cricket after bringing son Peter down to the Club for junior coaching.
What's your been your personal highlight whilst playing at Radlett? Finding myself keeping wicket for the the 2s for three years and getting the fielding award twice.
What are the main reflections from the 2012 season? Good fun, as usual in the 4s, but a season ruined by rain and, personally, too few runs.
What are your hopes and expectations for the 2013 season? Having taken on the captaincy, to be successful! The most important thing is that players enjoy their cricket and feel they are getting a fair deal on the field. However, winning is far more enjoyable than fighting relegation!
What make of bat do you use? I have been using, not too successfully, a Choice Willow. However, in November, I went on tour to Sri Lanka with Herts 50s and bought myself an Adidas Sachin Tendulkar Masterblaster, so I'm hoping some of the magic will rub off!
What's your favourite shot to play? Any that does not get me out!
What bowling style to do you most/least like to face? The faster the better, as the edges go for 4.  Hate those slow, loopy deliveries that give you too much time to think about where you are going to smash them.
Which cricket player (past or present) do you most admire? I have seen so many! No particular favourite, though as a youngster, supporting Lancashire, I thought Clive Lloyd was brilliant. Destructive batsman, useful bowler and top fielder, helping to make Lancs the most successful one-day side at the time.
Do you have any pre-match rituals? No, but I like time to bind my fingers before keeping, as they are a bit knackered!
