Radlett CC Sunday III v Sawbridgeworth on Sun 26 Jul 2009 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Sunday July 26th. Radlett Development 138/9 beat Sawbridgeworth 137 all out by 1 wicket
This was another nail biting finish on the lower ground this weekend. On Saturday the fourths just lost by 1 wicket, the development team managed to win by 1 wicket in the final over.
The match was played in cloudy and then drizzly conditions and became a low scoring affair. Shamit inserted Sawbo and our opening bowlers, Lee Greenland and Kushal Malde both bowled with good accuracy and were difficult to get away. Kushal looks an excellent prospect and Lee does move the new ball and had a good match. Lee got the initial breakthrough in the 8th over with the score only on 20. We then had to wait until the 22nd over for the second wicket but all the time had control of the runs, only going at 3 runs per over. Rikin Shah is still struggling with a back problem and had to come off after 2 overs, but Harry Will bowled an excellent length and the batters could not get him away, he took 1 for 17 in his 7 overs. Our spinners Hardain and Neel Malde showed good variety, and just when Sawbo were looking to push on in the final 10 overs, they struck with 3 wickets between them, and also a direct hit run out from Neel to dismiss their captain cheaply. Sawbridgewoth could only limp on to 137 all out. Our openers returned to mop up the tail, Lee finishing with 3 wickets and Kushal 2. Joe Wharton took an excellent catch to dismiss the dangerous Chris Bird for 59.
In previous games we have been able to score at will and 137 looked an easy target, with a pretty strong batting line up. I was wrong. We started well with Shamit scoring freely but when he fell for 18, we quickly lost 2 more wickets and were 28/3 in the 7th over. Brendan Jones came in to steady the ship and he and Rikin put on nearly 30 together before Rikin fell. We had a strong middle order with Hardain in next, and then Neel and Luca, and although Hardain had trouble getting the accurate Burson away, we were still up with rate. Brendan went for 17 and Neel came in and was scoring briskly though not as fluently as he can. Still we had 102 on the board and looked to be in control, with Hardain hitting a couple of lovely cover drives for 4, when the left arm spinner had Hardain stumped for 10. A replacement ball saw Neel playing too early and being caught for 24 at mid off, with the score on 110. Luca always looks calm in a crisis and hit a couple of early 4s to steady the nerves; but Harry Will and Lee Greenland went quickly and the last pair still needed 16 to win. Kushal can bat and supported Luca well , with Luca hit the final winning 3 runs with 4 balls to spare, ending on 22 not out.
Shamit captained well, juggling the bowling skilfully - and Luca gave nothing away behind the stumps, unlike the opposition keeper who conceded 13 byes.
It was a good game played in a friendly spirit, with both teams fighting to the end - it is a shame there had to be a loser.
Many thanks to Piero for umpiring again, and to Dhiresh for offering to score, though that seemed to backfire when we lost 3 wickets as soon as he started and he had to be replaced after one over.
