Sawbridgeworth v Radlett CC Sunday III on Sun 31 May 2009 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 5 wickets

Match report Sun May 31st Sawbridgeworth Development (117 all out) lost to Radlett(119/5) by 5 wickets.

On a better weekend for Radlett generally, the development side won their first match of the season. We have had two good previous performances, scoring over 200 runs in both matches but today had a weaker batting side. In fact, come Thursday night we thought we would have to concede the match, but Johnathan Ayling, George Wickham and Oliver Davis were able to help out and make their debuts for us this season.
The next problem was the meet time of 12.30, a bit late for a 1.30 start all the way to Sawbridgeworth. Fortunately, everyone was punctual and we just made the start, Simeon minus trousers though – fortunately the oppo had some spare ones.
In idyllic conditions, with the sun shining and the church bells ringing, Sawbo chose to bat on a good wicket. We opened the bowling with our ever presents, Tome Blazevski and Lee Greenland. Both bowl inswingers, Lee being very steady and Tome with a bit of extra pace. Tome bowled the opening batsman in the 3rd over and Sawbo looked to reset their innings. However, with the score on 24 in the 7th over, Tome had a devastating over, taking 3 wickets in 4 balls. Johnathan Ayling took a good catch to dismiss the dangerous opener and then a couple of inswingers saw off the 4 and 5.
Sawbo, though did bat to all the way down and were not going to roll over meekly. Lee finally got his first wicket with the score on 39, Shabir taking the catch. We kept the bowling tight, Johnson going for just 8 runs in 4 overs with his spin. A partnership was developing when Simeon Cohen had the dangerous left hander, Odonovan, caught at mid wicket by Johnson for 16.
Harry Will took a wicket with his first ball whilst at the other end Shabs was proving difficult to get away, taking 2 for 8 in his 6 overs.
The last wicket went to Lee, Johnson taking a stunning one handed catch high to his right. You could here the gasps all around the ground when he held on to it – it really was a magical piece of cricket. We can learn a lot from the South African fielding.
Johnson Mafa had led the team by example, very fast and keen in the field and with his field settings. He managed to keep the likes of Brendan and Simeon in check. Actually, Brendan was great in the field continually chirping away in an encouraging manner and actually showing a bit of pace in his running this season.
We didn’t drop any catches, and to restrict a decent team to 117 on a good pitch was a fantastic effort.
However, we could not assume victory as our batting wasn’t the strongest on paper.
The reply started with Harry and Reece Egerton batting to the sound of a house alarm going off for the first 10 minutes. They looked fairly composed and it was a surprise when Harry fell for 8 with the score on 19. There followed 2 further quick wickets, George for a golden duck and Oliver Davis soon following, caught behind.
So we were in trouble, but in came Brendan to steady the ship. Today he and Reece ran well (initially at least) and despite finding run scoring difficult always kept above the required run rate. Brendan played the best I have seen him bat and when he was run out for 37, we had 89 runs and felt safe.
Reece was still there before succumbing in the penultimate over for 25. He had faced some good bowling including a first team spinner, and looks a good prospect for us, with excellent temperament.
Lee Greenland came in to score a quick 16 and win the match for us with 8 overs to spare.
In this match the senior players of both sides also took an active part, making it even more rewarding to compete with experienced adults.
Thanks must go to Piero for his umpiring, to the Sawbridgeworth tea lady for a magnificent tea, and to our skipper, Johnson Mafa who helped us provide a winning performance. The captain can make such a difference. The team are a pleasure to manage and are steadily improving as they gain experience.
