Radlett CC Sunday III v Stevenage on Sun 03 May 2009 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Sunday May 3rd. Radlett Development Team 195/3 Lost to Stevenage 196/3 by 7 wickets.
On a blustery afternoon on the top pitch at Cobden Hill, Radlett took on a slightly more experienced Stevenage team our first development fixture of the season.
Toby Sutherland, captain for the day, won the toss and chose to bat. We lost the wicket of Marcus Freeman without scoring, at which Brendan Jones came in to see off the new ball with Tej Malde. Brendan lost his wicket with the score on 29 in the 14th over but that signalled the entrance of the aggressive Rikin Shah. He and Tej set about the bowling and we were scoring at 4 an over at the half way mark. There followed a few tight overs by the Stevenage bowlers, Whitworth and Fortune before Tej reached his 50. That signalled another dominant batting phase with Tej going on to score a classy maiden century. .
Rikin was run out having reached 56 and the young Rhys Jenkins came in to assist Tej in reaching his hundred with intelligent and promising batting. Radlett posted the score of 195 which looked reasonable in the conditions.
However, the ball was soft, the pitch good and the Stevenage batters got off to a flying start. They were scoring at the required 5 runs an over with both openers dominant. Shabs removed Chapman for 36 and there followed a quick wicket for Toby Sutherland, our most economical bowler.
We were evenly poised at the half way mark, but could not take another wicket until the 30th over. Lee Greenland bowled a good length to slow down the scoring rate, and Harry Will looked promising on his debut. Dean Caplin took one more wicket, but Stevenage had won a good competitive match. Their opener, Chris Whitwoth remained unbeaten on 91 runs, and his brother, Craig retiring on 50.
Our team will grow with more experience, and should have a competitive season ahead.
