Reed III v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 05 Sep 2009 at 12,30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 50 runs
Match report
Simeon Cohen took 6-24 to bowl Radlett V to 50-run Division 11 victory over Reed III at Buntingford. That brought Radlett's final record to eight wins, one more than last year, though the placing of 10th was two rungs lower than 2008.
Cohen, 13, and Ender Tahsin generously answered late call-ups after gaps had appeared in the team as selected. Tahsin's Jag proved especially useful as it had looked as though there would only be two cars available to transport the players to eastern Hertfordshire -- an annoying late crisis for the captain.
As usual for fill-in stalwarts, they were given key responsibilities. Tahsin was unfortunately bowled second ball by a big inswinger opening the batting, but as normal excelled in the field.
Cohen came on as first change and proceeded to take the last six wickets to fall as Radlett's total of 154 began to look quite commanding on a decent batting strip. The opposition assaulted Cohen's left-arm spin like dervishes on funny pills and were dismissed one by one, with Jacob Reza, Tom Clare (a running and diving effort at extra cover) and Mark Gray holding high-quality catches. One batsman, having launched Cohen for two fours and a six in one over, swung himself off his feet attempting another mighty hit and looped a catch to slip.
Cohen had bowled better than this before and taken no wickets, as the way cricket can be. Hemel Malde beat the outside edge perhaps three times an over to finish wicketless in seven overs. Cohen's final analysis was better than many bowlers return in a lifetime.
Radlett started a surreal afternoon by scoring at five or six an over until they were 42 for five. Then 18 year-old Reza put on 79 with Mike Dexter for the sixth wicket before another collapse. Reza, often timing the ball to perfection, drove his way to 79 with 13 fours and two sixes while Dexter rotated the strike sensibly.
If Radlett's score off 33 overs seemed a little low, Reza snapped up three early wickets in the 10 overs slotted in before tea to squeeze Reed's confidence. Lee Greenland picked up the fourth wicket, and Cohen's appearance heralded the start of non-stop action as Reed plunged to 54 all out.
Reed, though mid-table, looked one of the better sides Radlett had met -- certainly in bowling -- and it was no surprise they had matched champions Pirton in a narrow defeat. So this was a fine win for Radlett V in the club's clean sweep on Saturday, and the team ended the season with many more highs than lows.
Clare's final run tally was 579, which was 13th on the list of highest Division 11 scorers since the league went vertical in 2000.
Reza, a very good all-rounder, looks destined for a higher grade, though there will be other good quality players pushing for a place for 2010. Promotion will be possible if not essential next year, and good availability will be taken into account.
The fifths are expecially grateful for the excellent teas -- and that means excellent -- that are delivered to their home games at Queens' School, Bushey. So thank you to the tea makers and drivers, to Jon Lederman for umpiring, to Toby Sutherland for procuring an on-site cabinet for the match equipment, to Nick Searle for preparing a good pitch every time, to our many well-wishers, to a grand bunch of cricketers who were quite often a pleasure to captain this season.
