Match report Radlett fifths won their third Division 11 game in a row when they defeated Letchworth V by eight wickets, a success that was harder earned than the margin might suggest.

Tom Clare, with an undefeated 78, steered Charlie Randall's side home with nine balls to spare at Queens School Bushey against youthful newly promoted opponents who fought every inch of the way.

Clare brought his run tally to 536 at an average of 41.36 in a magnificent first season with the club. Without his 75-ball fifty, the run chase might not have been achieved on a soft pitch and slow outfield.

A first-wicket stand of 60 with Marcus Freeman proved crucial for a fourth win in five matches that kept outside promotion chances alive. When Freeman fell lbw and Rikin Shah was bowled driving, the obdurate Randall supported Clare in an unbroken partnership of 58 to secure victory.

Radlett's seam attack made a mediocre job of containing after Randall had won the toss -- that was apart from Ben Lederman and Harry Will, the two under-15 bowlers who sent down 15 overs between them for 30 runs and a wicket.

Will took no wickets, but he suffered from three dropped catches, none of them difficult. To add to his frustration a full toss, top-edged by the batsman and well caught by Sean Fulton at square-leg, was deemed a no ball -- a marginal decision that cost Radlett a big chunk of the Letchworth runs.

Randall's left-arm spin broke a useful opening stand, and most of his long spell cost one run an over until the short straight boundary took a peppering. Clare swooped for a direct hit run-out, and Fulton picked up two quick wickets in his second spell. Ultimately the Letchworth score of 143 should not have been enough if Radlett batted well -- which they did, thanks to Clare.
