Sawbridgeworth IV v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
Cath McNeill was called up for the fifth team against Sawbridgeworth IV to become the first woman player to represent Radlett in a Herts League match.
Though the Division 11 match was lost by eight wickets, Cath did well enough to merit further selection by batting nicely -- before she hit a high full toss back to the bowler -- and fielding well, with a better throw than most of her colleagues.
At least 40 players from this year's active list were unavailable or injured on Saturday, not even including the under-16s. It was a struggle to fill the team after two withdrawals in the top XIs on Friday night. In fact there were eight fifth-team changes from the previous week, which would be unsettling for any side, but McNeill's enthusiasm for the battle proved to be a welcome bonus.
McNeill, who lives in St Albans, eagerly took the chance to test herself after scrapping a night-in dinner with her boyfriend (traditionally the other way round for cricketers). Simon Randall agreed to turn out at the last minute to help out his father, having missed most of the season preparing for professional finals. Unfortunately a new signing failed to show up, so that the fifths had to play through with 10.
Though not a strong side, Radlett should have made more runs on a very slow pitch at the pleasant Much Hadham village ground. Too many wickets were gifted to undemanding bowling by good players when 30 or 40 more runs from the team might have put significant pressure on the opposition, though the Sawbridgeworth fielding was exceptional, saving at least a dozen or so runs.
Radlett's fielding was generally very good. Simon Randall, John Mansell and Tom Clare electric at times, and Simeon Cohen held a stinging catch, clinging on to a firm pull at midwicket, but the bowling lacked penetration. It was encouraging that Radlett contested the match to the end. No heads dropped in difficult circumstances, but the high level of absentees has become a worrying trend in the club this year.
