Radlett CC 3rd XI v Wormley on Sat 29 Aug 2009 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 58 runs
Match report
Radlett outplayed strong promotion contenders Wormley to come out winners by 58 runs, and all but eliminate their own relegation problems.
Winning the toss, Iain Edwards was forced to bat in difficult conditions that he knew would ease later in the day. So when the score was 55-3, with all three wickets from good bowling and the tough batting conditions it was not a surprise. The target was 200 and 10 batting points, and 69 of those runs came from the flashing bat of Robin Willis, who really came of age today. He made batting look easy, scoring well in excess of a run a ball, and was a class above every other batsman on show.
At the other end Iain Edwards played the perfect captain’s innings shepherding the side with a patient and gutsy 48 not out. Other batsmen played around him, and we finished 214-9 after our 53 overs.
We never thought that would be enough, but opening bowlers Dan Cohen, and yes, that bloke Rob Willis, gave us our best opening 10 overs of the season. Bowling full and straight, they extracted the small remaining venom from the wicket, always putting doubt in the batsmen’s minds, and removing the first three batsmen for under 50.
Thereafter Zahur Gitay, Hemang Majeethia and Shamit Nathwani all bowled with admirable control to chip away, and Neel Malde pounced at the end to take the last two wickets.
In between the fielding and catching was pretty sound, including a spectacular run out from a direct hit from Simon Randall.
Ben Charles was excellent behind the stumps, constantly threatening the batters, and looking utterly composed.
It is hard to believe that a side that can play this well could be at the toilet end of the league table, but in the last few weeks, Edwards has coaxed the best out of his side. And they are a young side that have learned much this year, and will improve.
So just four points to get next week and the brown ale corks can start to pop.
