Cockfosters 11 v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 22 Aug 2009 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 2 wickets

Match report A pulsating game that had everything except the final result.

Edo will put the report and full scores up but quick highlights were Matt Bell 62, Neel Malde 74 and Dom Ingram a solid first 50 and then a blistering attack after he got to 50 to make 110*. Edo declared at 48 overs on Neels dismissal and Cockfosters attacked from the off against the old ball. Daniel Cohen and Neil Lederman pulled it back and wickets fell regularly, with Zeddy getting 4, Leders 3 and Daniel 1, Neel Malde took 3 catches of which one was brilliant and Shamit also took 3 catches.

We lost off the penultimate ball of the match. 12 lost points but a performance to cheer.

And from Dom:

Radlett lost a good game by two wickets on the penultimate ball of this match. The result is strangely unimportant, because Radlett came away with 18 points, and have clawed another notch up from the drop zone.

Skipper Edwards made the thoroughly sensible decision, on winning the toss, to bat, try to get maximum batting points, and then take as many wickets as possible. To bowl first would leave the side vulnerable to having played well, but secure far fewer points.

Radlett’s batting was sensational, consisting of two partnerships, of 99 and 155, enabling a declaration at 48 overs on 254 for 2, riches indeed in a season where heretofore 200 had only been reached three times.

Matt Bell cudgelled the bowling in straightforward style, and it was a surprise when he was bowled for 61 with the score on 99 after 22 overs. In came Neel Malde, who rushed to a silky 71 with some gorgeous driving and cutting. At the other end Dom Ingram refused to get out, ending with an unbeaten 110. After reaching 50 from 100 deliveries gluing the innings together, he blazed the second 50 from 40 balls, the partnership with Neel Malde coming at a run a ball.

With such a big total and 52 overs to get 10 wickets, one is always in with a chance, on any wicket. But we bowled poorly at the start, and found Cockfosters reaching 100 for no wicket way above the scoring rate, and threatening to finish the game embarrassingly early.

But Dan Cohen made the breakthrough, and assisted by three superb catches from Shamit Nathwani, a massively talented cricketer who plays with a smile on is face, and great fielding from Neel Malde and Rob Willis in particular, the game went down to the wire.

A couple of difficult chances did go down, but that probably didn’t affect the eventual outcome. Zahur Gitay bowled his canny wobblers to end with 4-65, and Neil Lederman’s figures of 3-69 from 15 overs reflected his increasing potency as a strike bowler.

Cockfosters got the winning runs on the fifth ball of the last over with eight wickets down. A good game with lots of runs and excitement.

Relegation is still a distinct possibility, and should be resisted vigorously. And despite defeat yesterday, this was a good and heartening performance, which might well have led to a victory if not for our need for short term pragmatism. We seem to be getting better, and if the last two games are played with the same commitment, it would be just and fair for the 3rd XI to remain playing cricket at this level.
